Trinity suburb how to get. Trinity Suburb

Trinity Suburb in Minsk has historical meaning for the city, located on the left bank of Svisloch. It used to be administrative and shopping center capital Cities.

Creation and Development

The history of the Trinity suburb goes quite deep into antiquity. It was formed in the 12-13 century on the territory of the elevation near the river. Swisloch. Historians believe that the name of this place is associated with the local Trinity Church. It was founded by Prince Jagiello himself.

According to another version, the etymological roots are drawn to a redoubt named after the Holy Trinity, or the local church of the same name. Previously, trade was actively conducted here, entrepreneurs from Vilna and Mogilev gathered here. Sellers from Smolensk and Polotsk also visited Trinity Suburb.

In the 16th century, the market began to function, which is the largest area for trade. In the period of 15-17 centuries. fortifications were built here, with the help of which it was possible to protect the surroundings. Craftsmen, peasants, and military personnel lived in wooden houses. In 1809, the layout changed, because the old model of the device in this area was destroyed by a fire. To protect themselves from such misfortunes in the future, the city residents built buildings of stone by decree

In the period from the 30s to the 60s of the last century, different parts of the architectural complex were destroyed. In the 1980s, a major restoration was carried out here, the purpose of which was to recreate the architecture of Minsk inherent in the city in the 19th century.

general information

A characteristic feature of this quarter is its small buildings, which look so natural and harmonious that they are perceived as a single architectural ensemble. Similar to Trinity Mountain (this is the second name of the area), historical, architectural and cultural reserves are found in many european cities. But not every one of them can be compared with Minsk in the age of the first settlements: in this quarter they appeared a long time ago and coincided with the initial period of the High Middle Ages, from which we are separated for almost nine centuries.

A kind of “mixture” of eras and cultures can be seen in the fact that in this area there were the first Catholic church and the Orthodox Church of St. Boris and Gleb, the Holy Ascension Monastery and the cloister of the Catholic Order of Mariaquets, which did not reach modern times. These include the Basilian women's monastery of the Holy Trinity, preserved only in part. Today, a quiet and measured life reigns in this part of Minsk. Not only Minskers, but also guests of the capital of Belarus are happy to walk here, relax, while getting to know the sights, visiting museums and exhibitions.

History tour

The past of Trinity Suburb is eventful and associated with many historical figures. It’s enough to recall that it was here, in the heart of Minsk, that the fates of two outstanding classics of Belarusian literature crossed: the poet, publicist, literary critic and translator Maxim Adamovich Bogdanovich and the poet, playwright and publicist Yanka Kupala (Ivan Dominicovich Lutsevich). The first was born here, and the second's family lived here for a while.

A settlement called Trinity Mountain was formed on the Svisloch River, on a hill, in the period from the 12th to the 13th centuries. In those distant times, this area was the center of economic life, where trade routes crossed from Smolensk and Vilno, Mogilev and Polotsk. At the end of the XVI century, the Trinity Market began to work here, which immediately became the largest trading platform of the city. He was surrounded by fortifications, and the Trinity Mountain itself was inhabited by merchants, artisans, peasants and the military, who lived in wooden houses.

Why did the suburb receive such a name? There are several versions on this score. According to one of them, the toponym arose from the name of the earthen defensive fortification of the Holy Trinity, and according to another, from the Holy Trinity Convent. However, the most plausible version seems to be that the name was given to the area by the medieval Trinity Church, founded by the Grand Duke of Lithuania and Prince Vitebsk of Jagiello, who in 1386 adopted the title of King of Poland. Indeed: in 1390 a Catholic church of the Holy Trinity was built in the suburbs. It was built of wood, and at the beginning of the 19th century it burned down during a severe fire. Despite such a sad ending, this religious building forever went down in history as the first church on the territory of Minsk, which lasted over four centuries.

Together with him, from the fire in that 1809, buildings of other monasteries, churches and churches were significantly damaged, which represented a single architectural ensemble, admiring its splendor. Subsequently, the old layout was restored. Emperor Alexander I took care of this, giving the go-ahead for the implementation of the corresponding project. It was restored already in stone, only this did not save the historical appearance of the Trinity suburb from the turmoil of the 20th century. It was not only a war that went through it, but also many rash decisions made. For example, during the restoration of Kommunalnaya Embankment, they “tried” so hard that its historical part simply disappeared to a large extent. And this was not the only loss ...

Separate buildings and even entire streets were destroyed in the 30-60s. A little-known fact: on the site of the square, which is located in front of the opera house, in the XVI-XVIII centuries. there was a catholic cemetery. And on the site of the Ascension Monastery, its construction dates back to the 18th century; in 1945-1946, the headquarters building of the Belarusian Military District was erected. In the 80s of the last century, an unenviable fate befell some streets on the outskirts of Trinity suburb. One ran along Svisloch, originating near the modern Suvorov School and ending in the area of the Belarus Hotel.

sights

Despite the fact that the modern look of the Trinity suburb is not at all what it was a century ago, true connoisseurs of antiquity are very fond of being here. The knowledge that the foot of Maxim Bogdanovich and Yanka Kupala stepped on its narrow streets literally bewitches and mentally transfers to those distant times. Especially interesting for tourists is the quarter located between the streets of Starovilenskaya, the architect Zaborsky, Bogdanovich and the already mentioned Communal embankment. It was he, erected in 1817 in accordance with the regular development plan of Minsk, that is the basis of the state city’s historic center.

The borders of the protected zone, which included the western half of the Trinity suburb along with the second city hospital, were approved back in 2004 by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko “On the development of the historical center of Minsk”. The same document defines the concept of reconstruction, development and use of both the territory as a whole and the real estate located on it. Three years later, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution determining the status of historical and cultural attractions of the Trinity Suburb, since a significant part of the cultural monuments of the entire capital is concentrated here.

What has been done and what are your plans for the foreseeable future? The western part of the suburb was restored and became a real museum under open air. Not only the general style, but also concrete examples of stone buildings of the 19th century were restored, and now museums, many retail outlets and cafes are located in these ancient buildings. It is planned to reconstruct the former Trinity Monastery of the Basilians by placing a business and tourist centre. It is supposed that a foot platform will connect it with the western part of the suburb.

The most famous in the restored complex of buildings is, for example, the Wigdorczyk house (Kommunalnaya embankment, 6), in which Dominic Lutsevich, the father of Yanka Kupala, rented a house in 1890. In the former house of Ushakov - the corner of Alexandrovskaya street and the embankment of the same name - there is now the Glass and Porcelain store. And few people know that in one of the apartments where the pharmacist Pavlovsky lived, the Narodniks secretly gathered, who decided at one of the meetings to begin the release of the magazine “Socialist Building”. At 15 Bogdanovich's address - then it was Aleksandrovskaya street - at the end of the 19th century a shoe shop was opened, which later grew into a full-fledged shoe factory. On the eve of the First World War, in 1913, four dozen workers were employed in the production and in one year only shoes were made for a considerable amount at that time - 55 thousand rubles.

On the street Bogdanovich, 29 is a few buildings of the Suvorov Military School. They also represent historical and cultural value. The premises of the main building of the educational institution at the beginning of the 19th century were occupied by the monastery of the order of the Marivites and the hospital. Until 1854, the building served as a church. After his transfer to the Orthodox Church, two editorial offices were placed here: the Minsk Provincial News newspaper and the Orthodox Brotherhood magazine. In Beilin’s house, on Zaborsky Street, 3 (it was built in the middle of the 19th century), there was a locksmith workshop where an active populist Mikhail Rabinovich, then a student at the Technological Institute of St. Petersburg, studied crafts.

The largest object on the territory of Trinity Suburb is the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater of Belarus - the largest in the republic. Its building, located in the center of the Paris Commune square, was erected in 1935-1937. In the old days, this place was the Trinity Market. The building of the Defense Ministry of the Republic of Belarus along 1 Kommunisticheskaya Street, 1, built in 1945-1946, is also perceived as one of the business cards. and which is a monument of classicism.

Museums in the Trinity Suburb

In November 1987, the State Museum of the History of Belarusian Literature was opened in this area, which became one of the largest museums in the republic: over 50 thousand different exhibits are stored in it. A lot of manuscripts and photographs, rare books, personal documents and things of Belarusian writers - all this can be seen during the tour.

It is unfortunate that to this day the house where the famous classic Maxim Bogdanovich was born was not preserved - a museum dedicated to his work would probably be here. Since there is no house, the latter was placed in a building nearby. The opening of the museum took place on the 100th anniversary of the poet, in May 1991. Its expositions are located in five thematic rooms, each of which reveals a specific period in the life of Bogdanovich.

The older generation is probably familiar with the name of the Belarusian Soviet actor, director and writer Vladislav Iosifovich Golubok (1882-1937), the first national artist of the BSSR. His creative heritage is devoted to a whole branch of the State Museum of the History of Theater and Musical Culture of the Republic of Belarus, which is located in Trinity Suburb at the address: ul. Starovilenskaya, 14. As you know, the artist was repressed and sentenced to death. The archive of his theater was practically not preserved. The original artifacts that you will see in the "Drawing Room of Vladislav Golubok" (the so-called branch) were collected literally bit by bit by its employees.

In addition to museums, you can visit a variety of exhibitions. For example, regularly held at the National Exhibition Center "BelExpo" on the street. Yankee Kupala, 27 - many of them have international status. No less interesting are the collections of the private gallery “Famous Masters”. Here, on Kommunalnaya Embankment, 6, are exhibited products of modern decorative and applied art. On the street Storozhevskaya, 3 - this is the building of the Trinity pharmacy - you can get acquainted with old books on pharmacy and samples of pharmaceutical dishes. And those who care about the subject the environment, invites the Museum of Nature, located on the street. Bogdanovich, 9-a, in the building of the former synagogue.

Description

On the narrow streets of history

The corner of the old city - Minsk of the 19th century - is comfortably located in the very center of the capital. Narrow cobbled streets, low houses, an unusual layout - all this is Trinity suburb. And it’s just not possible to go here!

In those distant days, when the city was just beginning to grow, people settled on the outskirts that surrounded the upper city and the castle. One of the largest Minsk suburbs was Trinity. It was separated from the old part of the city by Svisloch, but already in those distant years gati and bridges were built here, and communication with the city was constant. Regarding the name of the suburbs, historians suggest that it arose in the 15th century. The suburb was called namely Trinity, because there was a defensive redoubt of the Holy Trinity (from the church of the Holy Trinity).

This suburb was also called the Trinity Mountain, it arose in the XII-XIII century and until the XIX century was considered a suburb of Minsk. It was impossible to locate the city center here - terrain inconvenient for defense. In the XIV century, the Ascension Monastery was erected here, in which there was a wooden church, on the site of which in 1620 Anton Maslyanka built a stone church. Around the monastery people began to settle. In the XV-XVII centuries earthen ramparts and ditches were dug around this territory.

The suburbs until the 16th century were wooden. It was connected to the city with the help of a gati, and later a bridge. In the second half of the XVI century there were already two bridges. It was after the construction of the bridge that trade revived, the suburb began to develop much faster, the main street of Troitskaya was built. Now it bears the name of Maxim Bogdanovich, and before that it was called M. Gorky and Aleksandrovskaya. It was possible to get to Svisloch along Troitskaya street, and from there along the Khlusov bridge to the Lower Market, which was the oldest shopping area in Minsk and located next to the Castle. In the XVI century, Trinity Street was a continuation of the main city street Nemiga.

On the spot where the handsome opera house now stands was the Trinity Market. In the suburbs in 1771 a school was opened; it operated at the monastery of the Moorish women. In 1809, there was a big fire in Troitsky, after which a female diocesan school and theological seminary were built here (now it is the Suvorov School).

Trinity Suburb gradually became a kind of center of attraction for the most diverse segments of the population. Here, in one of the houses, the Narodniks gathered, meetings were held. In addition, it housed an urban overnight stay, founded in 1892. In winter, there were homeless people who traded on Trinity Mountain and the Lower Market. Nochlezhka stood next to the Alexander bridge. In addition, not far from Svisloch was the first public city bath in Minsk, which was destroyed in the 1960s.

On the outskirts of Trinity suburb - on the very shore of Svisloch - worked one of the oldest mills in the city. The city authorities did not want to support it themselves, since it required a lot of money, so they rented it out. Even written information has been preserved that in 1838 a “four-stone water mill flour mill in the Lower Market” was leased out on bail 3,815 rubles for 12 years.

The Trinity suburb was inhabited mainly by artisans, traders or the military - in general, people of the middle class. It was here that the famous poet Maxim Bogdanovich was born, for some time the family of Yanka Kupala lived here.

The most destructive for the Trinity suburbs were the 1930-1940s. At this time, destroyed a large number of buildings of the Ascension Monastery, the Catholic cemetery of the XVI-XVIII centuries, an ancient street that ran along Svisloch. The Great Patriotic War also contributed to the destruction of the suburbs. Demolition of buildings continued after the war.

Reconstruction of this territory began by chance. In 1962, Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Minsk. During the tour, he asked where the historical center of the city is and what is now. The owners of the city were confused, as there was nothing to show the Secretary General. This was the impetus for the restoration of the Trinity suburb. True, restoration work began only twenty years later - in 1982. They were conducted until 1985. The watchmen do not approve of the result of these works - the spirit of antiquity, the soul of the suburbs, disappeared. But still, this place is one of the most beloved in the city, despite its decorativeness.

In the Trinity suburb there are a large number of cafes, shops, souvenir shops and museums. Among the latter, the Museum of Belarusian Literature stands out, which is located on M. Bogdanovich Street. A branch of the State Museum of the History of Theater and Musical Culture of the Republic of Belarus (V. Golubka’s drawing room) is located on Starovilenskaya Street. In addition, the Literary Museum of Maxim Bogdanovich was opened in the Trinity Suburb.

Having visited the Trinity suburb, it is impossible to pass by the Island of Tears. This island is a monument to fallen soldiers. It was opened in 1996, initially it was conceived as a monument to the soldiers who died in Afghanistan. Now the Island of Tears is intended to remind all the natives of Belarus who died in wars on the territory of our country and abroad. The central element of the memorial is the chapel, it resembles the Church of St. Savior, built by Euphrosyne of Polotsk. The base of the monument consists of figures of mothers who mourn their sons. Mourning heroes who did not save, and an angel. The authors of the memorial were sculptor Yu. Pavlov and architects M. Korolev, T. Koroleva-Pavlova, V. Laptsevich, G. Pavlova, A. Pavlov, D. Khomyakov. From here - from the Island of Tears - there is a beautiful view of the Trinity Suburb, the Upper Town, as well as Pobediteley Avenue

Probably in Minsk it is difficult to find a place that would be more famous for tourists than Trinity Suburb. it business card cities, the image of which can be found on postcards, stamps, souvenirs, as well as on some banknotes.

Historians believe that the area of Troitsky suburb was settled already in the XII-XIII centuries, and the numerous references to this territory in written sources of the XVI-XVII centuries allows us to judge the presence of a city-wide center in the XIV-XV centuries. The area was built up with wooden houses in which artisans, traders, peasants and the military lived.

In 1809, a terrible fire destroyed all the wooden structures of the Trinity Suburb. The architectural layout of the district, which has survived to this day, the residents of the city owe the plan for the restoration of the suburbs, developed after the fire.

In the 80s. XX century restoration work was carried out to attract tourists to the Trinity Suburb. Unfortunately, the restorers did not manage to avoid extremes: current view of the suburbs has little in common with the historical, and part of the development of the XVII century. along the Communal Embankment was completely demolished. Moreover, literally a hundred meters from the suburbs, a 25-storey residential complex “At Troitsky” was erected, during the construction of which the provisions of the Law on the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage were not taken into account ...
