What is interesting for children in the Trinity suburb. Trinity suburb: history and modernity

Often otherwise called the Trinity Mountain, it is a historical district of the Belarusian capital in the north-eastern part historical center   Minsk, on the left side of the Svisloch river.

Once Trinity Mountain was the commercial and administrative center of the city. Today, this place belongs to those few districts of Minsk, in which buildings have survived to one degree or another, the age of which ranges from six to a couple of centuries.

The history of the Trinity suburb

The name "Trinity Estate" comes from the Trinity Church (was built in the XVI century) or from the Church of the Holy Trinity, built here at the beginning of the XVI century. It is believed that it was here that the first stone church was built, which was built by order of King Jagiello in 1390.

In the XVI-XVII centuries. around the Trinity suburb, ditches were dug, flooded with water, and earthen ramparts were poured.

At the same time, there was one of the centers for the production of tiles. This is evidenced by fragments of tiles and forms for extruding drawings found by archaeologists.

Wooden houses were built, and mostly middle-class people — merchants and craftsmen, peasants and military — settled and lived in the suburbs.

After a big fire in 1809 Trinity Suburb   acquired its current form - square blocks and streets intersecting at right angles.

Then in the center of the suburbs Trinity Square was developed (now - the Paris Commune Square), where bazaars were held every Sunday.

After the Second World War, Minsk was almost completely destroyed, but it was decided to restore the Trinity Suburb only in 1962.

Many architectural elements such as gates, wrought iron fences and stairs were lost, and individual buildings and interiors were restored from scratch.

Unfortunately, to our time only one quarter has been completely preserved, showing a typical building of the XIX century, but, nevertheless, people continue to live and work here.

Trinity Suburb is one of the most picturesque corners of Minsk. Tile roofs, cozy courtyards filled with floral and coffee aromas - all this fit in a small quarter located on the banks of the Svisloch. It is hard to believe that most of his houses were built here only in the 1980s on the site of more ancient architectural monuments. Yes, the history of the old suburb recalls the fate of the whole of Minsk, which over the course of its existence has been destroyed more than once, then to rise again from the ashes.

Once Trinity was the largest suburb in the city. Despite the fact that it was separated from the old Mensk by the river, numerous bridges made it possible to begin the settlement of these places at the dawn of the future capital of Belarus.

Story

The first settlement on Trinity Mountain arose in the 13th century. It is assumed that its name came either from the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity, which was founded by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Jagiello, or from defensive redoubts bearing the same name.

In ancient times, the Trinity suburb was considered an important center of trade: there was a crossroads of roads from Vilna, Polotsk, Mogilev and Smolensk, and since the 16th century the largest market in the city has been operating on this place.

In 2009, the square, broken down on the site of the former market, was returned to its former name: Troitskaya Gora. On its territory is the Opera and Ballet Theater of Belarus.

In the 15-17 centuries, Trinity Mountain, the Lower Market and the Rakovskoye suburb were surrounded by fortifications. The village consisted mainly of wooden houses.

Due to the devastating fire in 1809, the historical layout of Troitsky was lost. Quarters restored already in a safer stone. In the 1930s and 1960s, during the Soviet “beautification”, whole streets of Troitsky ceased to exist.

There is a legend among Minsk residents that during a trip to the capital of the BSSR, Nikita Khrushchev asked him to show him the historical center of the city. Minsk mayors were in an awkward situation - there was nothing to show. They say this event prompted local authorities to begin restoring the heart of the capital.

In the early 1980s, restoration was carried out here, which allowed to recreate the architectural appearance of Minsk in the 19th century.

What to see

Today, Trinity Suburb is a few blocks, taking a walk along which you can get acquainted with the buildings of a typical urban development of the 19th century.
