The city of Portoroz is the most popular holiday destination of the Slovenian Riviera on the Adriatic Sea. The mild climate and beautiful landscapes make rest in Portoroz the most desirable among tourists from all over the world. This resort town can fully compete with the most fashionable resorts in Croatia.

Portoroz - history and modernity

Historically, back in the early Middle Ages, these places were valued for their healing mud and waters with a high content of mineral salts. In the chronicles of the XIII century, left at the monasteries, the monk chroniclers noted the healing properties of local mineral waters and mud. For a long time, salt was mined in these places. And only in 1885 they learned about Portoroz as a resort, it was in this year that the first clinic opened, which was engaged in restoring the health of many rich people in Europe. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the first high-quality Palace Hotel appeared here. Today, on the site of the once-popular Palace Hotel, there are several fashionable hotels and spa complexes.

Today Portoroz (Slovenia) attracts tourists by its ratio of quite reasonable price and high level of services. In 1994, a spring with thermal water was discovered near Portoroz, which added to the list of services provided by local spa and wellness centers. Portoroz has become not only a tourist destination, but also a medical resort.

Thanks to the mild climate, the weather in Portoroz almost never presents any unpleasant surprises. Winter does not bring frost, and summer is rarely sultry.

Portoroz (Slovenia) on the map occupies an advantageous position on the Adriatic coast near the borders with Italy and Croatia. The city is 100 km away from the capital of Slovenia, the city. How to get there

When building your tourist route, the question arises of how to get to Portoroz (). There are no problems with transport delivering tourists to the resort. Several options for getting to a vacation destination make travel easier. From Ljubljana you can get on a shuttle bus, next to the resort. These buses run several times a day, at peak times the number of buses circulating between cities increases. Buses start running from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Portoroz Airport accepts only charter flights from (flight duration - 1 hour) and from Trieste (about 30 minutes on the way). Therefore, when planning your vacation in these places, you should consider different options for arriving in Portoroz.

Regular flights of Aeroflot and Adria airlines (travel time is about 3 hours), as well as connecting flights of European low-cost airlines (Air Serbia, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa) fly from Moscow to Ljubljana. You can get from Ljubljana by regular bus, taxi or by rented car (travel time is about 2.5 hours). You can also get to Portoroz from the Croatian Pula airport (100 km) or from Italian Trieste. You can take a ferry from Venice (travel time is about 3 hours).

The time difference with Moscow is minus 2 hours in the summer, minus 3 hours in the winter.

The climate is mild, Mediterranean. The resort is located on the same latitude with the Crimean coast, so the climatic conditions are largely similar - these are mild, low snowy winters and warm, dry summers. Heat is easily tolerated due to lack of moisture. The city is protected by mountains from cold winds. Water temperature in July-August is plus 20-25 ° С.

Portoroz has a narrow strip of loose sandy beach, which distinguishes it from the neighboring resorts of Piran and Izola with concrete platforms. A sandy municipal beach with a relatively gentle slope is located to the left of the LifeClass hotel complex. It has playgrounds and a volleyball court.

Most hotels have their own beaches (mainly concrete platforms with a descent into the sea). Depth begins abruptly. This should be taken into account when going on vacation with young children.

Portoroz has a well-developed hotel infrastructure. Accommodation options can be chosen to your taste - from inexpensive apartments and small family hotels to first-class five-star complexes. All hotels, with the exception of the Bernardin complex, located on the seafront, are located across from the beach.

Kempinski Palace 5 * - the most luxurious hotel on the coast. Located in the center of the resort. On its territory there is a SPA center with a complex of pools with a total area of \u200b\u200b1500 sq.m.

The Bernardin hotel complex is located on the seafront, a 15-minute walk from the resort of Piran and 3 km from the center of Portoroz. It includes the Grand Bernardin 5 *, Histrion 4 * hotels and Vile Park 3 * villas. On the territory of the complex is located the water park "Laguna Bernardin" (hotel guests are provided with free access to the pools), the Health and Beauty Center Paradise SPA, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Grand Hotel Portoroz 5 * - a luxury hotel for the most demanding customers. On its territory is the Terme & Wellness LifeClass SPA center with a pool complex. For hotel guests - free admission to Riviera Casino and Portoroz Grand Casino.

  Wellness and SPA

“Sauna Park” - a complex with different types of saunas (salt, thalasso, Finnish, herbal and others), ice cave, massage waterfall, chromotherapy. In the center, salt is used from the Secovel saltworks, known since the 13th century.

Aqua Relax - located on the territory of the Metropol Hotel. Infrastructure and services: sea water pools, massage areas, jacuzzis, saunas, various types of massage, gym, beauty salon.

Piran is a town adjacent to Portorož with a medieval atmosphere. It is considered the most beautiful resort of the Slovenian Riviera, and its cozy fish restaurants, concentrated on the promenade, are the best on the coast. The architecture of the city is a well-preserved example of medieval Venetian architecture.

Lipitsa stud farm - here the famous breed of white horses is bred, which was once supplied to the Austrian imperial court.

Postoinsky Pit - the karst cave, the largest in Europe, open to the public.

Form Viva Park is an exhibition of contemporary open-air sculptures. The park was opened in 1961.

It is rare that one of the guests of the resort misses the opportunity to visit the most beautiful city of the Adriatic - Venice. From Portoroz to Venice, one-day bus excursions, walks on high-speed catamarans and ferries are offered.

Fishing, yachting, boating and catamarans, beach sports. Hiking and cycling along the sea along the shady promenade are very popular. Piran Bay is a fairly popular place among diving enthusiasts. On the coast, schools for beginner divers are open, as well as equipment rental points.

  Features of rest

Portoroz is the most popular seaside resort with a well-developed infrastructure. It can be recommended for families. Most hotels have children's clubs in the summer and babysitting services. But you must remember that this is one of the most expensive resorts in Slovenia, a respectable European public prefers to relax here.

The Adriatic coast of Slovenia has not yet been taken seriously to consider as an option for a full two-week beach holiday. But in vain! In vain because the sea here is clean, and local beaches may well compete with the lagoons of Croatia.

In addition, the local towns - real open-air museums, hotels and services - are an order of magnitude better than their neighbors (Croatia and Montenegro), plus Trieste and Venice are within easy reach, which means beach vacations can be combined with a rich educational program.

In general, Slovenia is full of surprises. Settlements on the Adriatic coast have long been partners of the Venetian Republic (during the period of the latter’s power), which was reflected both in the external appearance of cities and in the local language - Italian in Piran is equal in rights with Slovenian, and since Slovenian is close to Russian, large problems in communicating with the local population should not arise.

COTTAGE: THE MOST STYLISH COAST RESORT

Portoroz is in the lead in the list of the most phenomenal resorts in Slovenia, it is also called an analogue (note, even the names are similar).

In the photo: hotels on the seafront of Portoroz

Amazingly beautiful hotels were erected along the long promenade, especially the local Hotel Palace, which looks like a palace built by order of Louis XIII, is especially remembered.

In the photo: a hotel with a talking name Palace

In the vicinity of the hotels, as they say, in the best traditions of Monte Carlo, there is a casino, vacationers ply along the promenade or on foot, or on electric scooters that work according to the Segway principle. In short, dolce vita, as it is. Local beaches, alas, are not sandy, but stone (however, it is always worth remembering the Adriatic, if only Croatia), and therefore special stairs are suitable for descending into the water.

Sunbeds are installed on lawns near beach cafes (I must say that the cafes themselves surprised not only with stylish interiors and an excellent menu, but also with reasonable prices).

From the point of view of historical sights, Portoroz cannot boast of anything, this place is just a great resort area for those who want to swim from day to day, sip cocktails in the evening in great bars.

But the lack of attractions in Portoroz is not a problem, because Piran, which is rich in their neighboring town, is just a stone's throw away.

PIRAN - PEARL OF SLOVENIA

The feeling of aesthetic ecstasy begins to embrace already at the entrance to the city: the road goes around the mountain, and from the top a view of the Piran embankment with yachts moored to it, the azure sea and red roofs of old houses opens up with amazing beauty.

In the city there are always problems with parking (and it costs a lot - 3 euros per hour), so it is best to leave the car in a multi-story parking lot outside the city, and go to the city on foot along the promenade.

In the photo: yachts on the promenade of Piran

Piran is home to a little over 4,000 people, but the city boasts an interesting history. He was never part of the Republic of Venice, but was a partner of Venice.

The fact is that there are salt lakes outside the city, and Piran was the main supplier of salt for the Most Serene Republic. However, the influence of the Venetians is constantly traced here: firstly, bas-reliefs with the famous winged lion (the symbol of Venice) adorn the walls of buildings, and secondly, the very structure of the streets - they are narrow here and it is very easy to get lost between them - remind of the city of gandol.

But the first thing you will get on the promenade of Piran. It is used both as a mooring for yachts, and as a place for swimming. Despite the presence of boats, the water in the lagoon is blue and absolutely transparent; iron stairs descending from the pier are adapted for entering the water here, as in Portoroz.

And on the pier near the lighthouse there are many cafes, sitting over a glass of wine in the wicker chairs of which, you can easily lose track of time.

In the photo: cafe on the promenade of Piran

The town itself seems like a toy. In the center is a perfectly round square bearing the name of Giuseppe Tartini. Tartini is an Italian composer and violinist, a native of Piran, and his statue rises in the center of the square, and higher on the hill, if you raise your head, you can see the second symbol of Piran - the statue of an angel crowning the dome of the Cathedral of St. George.

Pictured: Monument to Giuseppe Tartini in Piran

The fact that Piazza Tartini has such a regular shape has an interesting explanation. In past centuries, this place was not an area at all, but a backwater, where ships entered the parking lot. Then, since the water in the closed lagoon did not circulate and, as a result, was rotten, the city “closed the lagoon” with plates and the area was obtained.

In those days, the lagoon was surrounded by a fortress wall, but after the harbor was transformed into a square, the need for it disappeared, arches were cut into the wall and apartments were built (as you know, in ancient times, the fortresses were built strong, and therefore wide, so that the square enough for apartments). It’s funny, but many pirans still live in the wall.

The streets are interconnected by a system of transitions, which is why they resemble the circulatory system. At first, there’s a great chance to get lost: since the streets are thin and turn one into the other, you can turn the wrong place a couple of times and find yourself at the starting point of the walk.

Photo: Giuseppe Tartini Square in Piran

But this is fearless, because the city is tiny, and all the roads here inevitably lead either to Giuseppe Tartini Square or to the promenade, so even people with incurable topographical criticism will have to try hard to get lost in Piran.

To fully enjoy the beauty of Piran, overcome laziness and the temptation to stay in one of the coastal cafes and climb the hill to the Cathedral of St. George. It offers an excellent view of both Tartini Square and the Adriatic, and by the way, if you look closely, you will notice the faded outlines of the big city on the horizon - this is she, the beautiful Venice.

Photo: Giuseppe Tartini square aerial view

But to see Trieste, you do not need to look closely, it is located on your right hand from you. The left bank belongs to Croatia.

In the photo: tower and lighthouse in the city of Piran

Up the stairs you can get to the old castle, which is located on a hill above the city, and if you decide to go down, you will find yourself on the street of artists: in local galleries they sell paintings, mainly sea views.

In the photo: a street in galleries in Piran

Of course, there is a lot of nonsense in the shops, but if you want, you can find very interesting works by local artists. And in the finale of what you should try in the restaurants of Piran and Portoroz. As you might guess, all kinds of seafood are held in high esteem in the coastal towns of Slovenia. From the fact that inexpensive, but insanely delicious - sardines, they are served here and grilled, and salted, and deep-fried. In addition to sardines, restaurants prepare the entire “Adriatic classics”: dorada, sea bass and so on.

Of the local experts, various versions of squid are worthy of attention. Fried rings, boiled (as part of salads) and baked squid with sheep cheese inside. However, when ordering a meal, remember that the portions are gigantic, so one plate may well be enough for two, or even three.

In the photo: Malvasia wine and Slovenian mineral water

Regarding the wine. Malvasia is widespread in Slovenia, it differs from the Croatian counterpart in a more refined taste, which is understandable: due to the close proximity to Italy in Slovenia, the tradition of winemaking is at a higher level than in other Slavic countries.

Another of the noteworthy sweets: local natural apple juice, exactly the same as our grandmothers cooked, and yellow bread.
