Rome, of course, is not a seaside city, but nearby you can find many interesting places in terms of beach holidays. Moreover, if you are going to Rome in the summer, especially in July or August, then it makes sense to think about whether it is worth staying in the city for a long time. It is hot in summer in Rome, and it is much more pleasant to spend the daytime by the sea than on the hot streets and squares of the Italian capital.
However, if you do decide to live in Rome, or if you are planning a trip for the less hot months and just want to get out of Rome for a day to wander along the sea and breathe in the salty air, then there are more than one suitable place.
This article is devoted to the seaside resorts in the immediate vicinity of Rome. Next, we will consider the most interesting directions in our opinion. At the same time, we will focus primarily on the possibilities of public transport (primarily railway - see www.trenitalia.com).
So, by sea from Rome: where to go, how to get there, where to settle, etc. etc.
The nearest beaches to Rome are in the town Lido di Ostia (Lido di Ostia)... In fact, this is a suburb of Rome, and the railway line connecting Lido with the capital is, in fact, an extension of the Roman metro. You can get here by train Roma Lido from Porta San Paolo train station, connected to Piramide metro station (see diagram). It takes only half an hour to go. In addition, we note that Lido di Ostia is located near Fiumicino airport, from where you can get to Lido by bus from the Cotral company. This is the question of summer trips to Rome. It is quite possible to stay in Lido - closer to the sea and beaches - and from there go to Rome. True, there are not so many accommodation options, and therefore the issue of booking should be taken care of in advance, while there is plenty to choose from. Pay attention, for example, to Hotel La Scaletta and Hotel Ping Pong, located in the center of resort life, or to the small but very nice guest house Il Mare Di Roma, just outside the center.
Despite all of the above, people usually come to Lido from Rome for a day to swim, sunbathe and return. The beaches are sandy and well maintained throughout the swimming season. Paid sites prevail, but free sites are also found. The sea near the coast is shallow, which attracts families with small children here, but there is also entertainment for young people. Night life in Lido di Ostia there is a place to be - there are beach bars and discos (see www.discotecheostia.it), although of course this is not Ibiza for you.
If you need a place for a relaxing beach holiday and you do not plan to travel to Rome every day, then take your time to opt for the Lido. It makes sense to look further south and take a closer look at places such as Anzio (Anzio) and Nettuno (Nettuno), which can be reached by the Trenitalia trains (about an hour drive from Rome). This is practically one whole - you can walk from one town to another, and both make a rather pleasant impression, and there are attractions here. In other words, you will always have the opportunity to diversify the lazy beach vacation walks in the vicinity. And the sea is cleaner here than in Lido di Ostia, although it is just as shallow, which is good for children, but it is unlikely to please those who like to swim at depth.
Anzio and Nettuno are mostly locals. Therefore, there are relatively few hotels here. Alternatively, you can consider Hotel Riviera (Anzio) or Astura Palace Hotel (Nettuno). There are also small guest houses and apartments: see, for example, Casa Vacanze Anzio Centro in Anzio and Appartamento Romana in Nettuno.
However, the most interesting resorts in our opinion are located even further south. It - San Felice Circeo, Terracina, Sperlonga and Gaeta.

Although if the budget allows, you can always order a direct transfer from the airport (see, for example,) or rent a car (see). After all, there are buses. For example, from the Roman bus station Laurentina, you can get direct to Terracina and San Felice Circeo (hereinafter, see the Cotral route planner). The journey takes just over two hours. In Terracina, you can take a bus to Sperlonga and Gaeta. Another way to get to Terracina is to first take the train to Monte San Biagio and then take a bus to Terracina. In short, in this direction it is much more convenient to go by car, especially since there are a lot of interesting things in the vicinity, and to see all this again you will need a car.
The busiest place among the listed - Terracina (Terracina)... The beaches here are sandy, long and mostly paid, but free areas are also found. The entrance to the water is shallow, but not far from the depth. The historic city center is very interesting. There is where to walk - both in Terracina and in the immediate vicinity (you can, for example, climb the mountain to the Temple of Jupiter). Wonderful embankment. There are many playgrounds. Beach discos. Etc. etc. In short, Terracina allows you to organize a vacation for every taste. And a wallet, since there are different accommodation options here: from the expensive Grand Hotel L "Approdo to quite budget guest houses like Il Giardino Di Adriana B&B and numerous apartments.
San Felice Circeo (San Felice Circeo) a much quieter and more secluded place, but the beaches here are at least as good as in Terracina. And the nature around is amazing, since this is actually the territory of the national natural park (see parcocirceo.it), how, by the way, and Sabaudia (Sabaudia)located on the other side of Cape Circeo (also perfect place for a quiet beach holiday). In San Felice Circeo, you should pay attention, for example, to the Hotel Capo Circeo, and in Sabaudia to the Hotel Oasi Di Kufra.
Nice in terms of beaches and Sperlonga (Sperlonga), and the atmosphere here is, so to speak, more intimate. The historic center of the city has climbed a cliff, its streets are intricately intertwined, and snow-white houses are piled on top of each other. There are beaches on both sides of the cliff: fine golden sand, clear sea and picturesque views of the Old Town - beauty! What's more, Sperlonga has hotels located right on the seafront, which further enhances the experience: see, for example, Albergo La Sirenella and Hotel Aurora. True, the cost of living in such hotels is quite high. Cheaper hotels like the Elaia Garden Hotel, located a little further from the beaches (5-10 minutes walk). Families with children and car travelers should also pay attention to the Residence Le Spiagge apartment complex.
Finally, Gaeta (Gaeta)... This is perhaps the most cheap resortwhen compared with Sperlonga, Terracina and San Felice Circeo. Meanwhile, the beaches here are just as good, there is also where to walk and what to see ( historical Center cities, the beautiful natural park Monte Orlando on the mountain of the same name, the Turkish grotto, etc.) and hotels, of course, are also available: see, in particular, the Hotel Mirasole International and Hotel Viola, as well as the cozy guest house B&B il Giglio Marino. It is more convenient to get here not through Terracina, but through Formia, which has a direct rail link with Rome. From Rome to Formia can be reached in just over an hour. From Formia to Gaeta about 15 minutes by bus. So, if you wish, you can go to Gaetou in one day.
Formia (Formia), by the way, is also suitable for a beach holiday, as is the nearby town Scauri (Scauri), where there is also a railway station and prices are pleasing with moderation.

Within an hour and a half drive north of Rome are places such as Ladispoli, Santa Marinella and Lido di Tarquinha.
So, before Ladispoli (Ladispoli) from the main station of Rome, Roma Termini, you can get there in just 40-50 minutes, and if you go from the Roma San Pietro station (next to the Vatican), the journey will take less than half an hour. (By the way, read more about where to live in Rome in the corresponding article.) From the Ladispoli-Cerveteri railway station to the sea is only 10-15 minutes on foot. The beach here is sandy (dark volcanic sand) and quite long, there are both paid and free areas (there are more paid ones, of course). In a word, Ladispoli is a good option for a one-day outing, and given the proximity to Rome, you can stop here for a few days in order to be able to visit the Eternal City from time to time (there is practically nothing to see in Ladispoli itself, and in general the place is not very picturesque) ... There are not many hotels here, but some options are still available: see, for example, Alle Tamerici Hotel, Hotel Villa Margherita and Hotel Miramare.
Santa marinella (Santa Marinella) is located a little further - about an hour's drive from Rome - and generally makes a better impression than Ladispoli. It is a small and quiet resort, more suitable for a relaxing family vacation (including with children). The central (sandy) beach of this town in the summer months is usually packed to capacity, especially in the free part of it. However, not far away (near the castle of Odescalchi and the Hotel L "Isola) you can find a small" wild "beach - rocky, with crystal clear water.Another (pebble and rocky) beach is located at some distance from the city center and its railway station, however here it is much more spacious. From the station about 15 minutes on foot, landmark - Hotel del Sole. This option is also possible: some hotels (for example, Hotel Villa delle Palme) have their own "beaches" in the form of a platform protruding into the sea with sun loungers and beach umbrellas (to swim in the sea, you need to go down into the water using a special ladder).
By the way, if you get off the train one stop earlier - at Santa Severa station (be careful: not all trains stop here) - you can walk (10-15 minutes on foot) to the castle located on the seashore (Castello di Santa Severa). This castle is remarkable both in itself and in that it is adjacent to a fairly wide sandy beach - much less crowded than the beach in Santa Marinella. In other words, Santa Severa (Santa Severa) no less, and perhaps even more interesting option if you need a beach, where you can go for a day from Rome.
Lido di Tarquinia (Lido di Tarquinia) Is another beach resort north of Rome worth mentioning separately. This place is quite popular, but, at the same time, not trampled by tourists. It is worth paying attention in particular to the beaches Santo Agostino (Santo Agostino), between Tarquinia and Civitavecchia. The beaches of Tuscany begin even further north. Ski resorts near Rome
Unfortunately, this segment of tourism is not very developed in Rome itself, therefore you will not find mountains for skiing very close. However, there are still ski resorts in Italy near Rome, though at a distance of 100 km. Three years ago, the Roman government wanted to start building a complex for skiers near Ostia, but the locals did not accept such an innovation due to the crisis. Apparently three main ski resorts far from Rome, it was enough for them:
- Campo Felice.
- Terminillo.
- Campo Imperatore.
"Happy Field" or Campo Felice
A little-known place among tourists. This is his whole charm. There are the same mountains and slopes, but there are much fewer people, so skiing will be comfortable and safe. This resort is located in the Abruzzio region, and you can get to it either by car or by bus. The path will not be confusing - you will need to drive along the straight A24 for an hour and a half. Few people know about buses: only one train leaves Rome in the direction of the “happy field” a day. You will find this bus near the San Giovanni metro at 7.15 am.
You have to drive to Campo Felice 120 km, but upon arrival you will find ironed ski paths and friendly locals - there are practically no tourists in this place. Consider this an advantage, because prices in this place will be an order of magnitude lower than Roman prices and food in local restaurant it will be tastier than the concoctions of the capital's eateries. Just be careful not to stay too long - at 4 pm the lifts are turned off.
Terminillo
Another more popular resort among visitors to Italy is Terminillo. You can get here both by highway and by train on rails. The journey will take about 1 hour.
If you have chosen the train as transport, then you will need to go from to Riete station. Near this station is Terminillo, the most high mountain which was named "Roman mountain". Its height is 2.2 km, and the lifts serve a maximum height of 1.7 km, so another 500 m, if desired, can be overcome on foot, we will conquer the top of the mountain. Campo imperatore

If your main goal is the sea, then don't confuse Ostia Beach with Ostia Antico. Previously, this place was the greatest port of Rome, but over the years the sea has moved away from the peninsula and the historic city deepened into land. If you still have time, take one day and go to see the ruins of the once majestic city of Ostia.
As for the quality of beach holidays in Ostia, it is difficult to put a rating less than 5 for this place. The beaches are paid, because they keep everything on the level. To take a car and go from Rome to the sea, you need a passport, an international driver's license and a credit card. In principle, most companies do not protest against ordinary Russian rights - if only the driver's data were spelled out not only in Cyrillic, but also in Latin. You can get to the sea by metro! Take the line B train and continue to Piramide station. There you have to walk and change to another train, next to the Cristoforo Colombo station, where get off at the Lido Centro stop. She'll be there in about half an hour. Such a trip will cost 1.5 euros, and a regular ticket for the Roman public transport is suitable for it.

City beach
The local beach is called Lido Ostia. It is quite long, sandy, with a gentle slope into the water. Admission is free, but sun loungers and umbrellas are provided for money (from 15 euros). There are small pay areas owned by hotels.

Because of the breakwaters, the sea at the free beach of Fiumicino is more like a series of salt water pools - it is small, shallow bays, fenced off from open water by stones. Great for swimming with young children, but might not be suitable for adults looking for a swing.
It is better to come here in July or August, but keep in mind that the cleanliness season coastline leaves much to be desired.

How best to get to the resort
From Rome Termini train station, take the regional train Reg of the state carrier Trenitalia to Maccarese station.
