History

In 695, the city was called Julfar. This is the first surviving mention in the chronicle, in general, evidence of the presence of people dates from the first millennium BC. The Armenians founded the settlements, who fled from the Mongols and through Persia arrived on the Arabian Peninsula. Julfar was located at the intersection of trade routes. Here they traded pearls.

Pirates often raided the rich trading city. Observation towers have been preserved since those times when it was required to timely inform citizens about sea robbers. Also, the towers served as lighthouses for merchant ships.

Entertainment

Among the interesting places that are worth visiting are the Hutt thermal springs, the Iceland water park, the Wadi Bi canyon in the Hajar mountains, and shopping centers.

Hutt Sources

Located in an Arab village about 20 minutes from the city. Many tour operators offer tours here. The baths offer views of the date grove and agricultural areas.

However, they come here primarily for spa treatments, treatment and prevention. Bathing in thermal springs is indicated for diseases of the musculoskeletal system; also, following professional recommendations, it favorably affects the skin.

Waterpark "Iceland"

Located in the city, has been operating since 2010. It occupies an area of slightly less than half a square kilometer. Among the attractions of the water park - “Penguin Falls”, the highest of the artificial waterfalls in the world (36.5 meters high, 164 meters wide); water slides with a total height of 33 meters, a reservoir with an artificial coral reef, a pool with artificial waves, a reservoir with the eloquent name “Whirlpool”.

In addition to water attractions, there is an amusement park for children and adults. There is a shopping center with shops for every taste.

Wadi Bi Canyon

This is a natural attraction called the "Grand Canyon" of the UAE, referring to the appropriate place in the United States. Previously, stones were mined here, from which they later built Dubai's skyscrapers. Today they make tourist trips here.

The goals of the trips are different: for someone it is enough to admire the views of the canyon located in the middle of the desert at an altitude of a kilometer above sea level; someone is mastering rock climbing, trekking and mountain biking.

Keep in mind:

 1. Extreme sports require appropriate training.
 2. A trip to Wadi Bi Canyon takes all day. It is worth taking a supply of water with you, even if the food is included in the price.

Shopping centers

Shopping is the most popular tourist attraction in the UAE. There are several malls in the city, among which stand out:

 • Manar, located near Al Mantaser Road, the oldest in the city, offers goods of all categories;
 • Safir, located on Sheikh Rashed Bin Said Rd, is known mainly for souvenir shops and food courts;
 • Al Hamra, located on Sheikh Mohammad Bin Salem Rd, you can find shops of different categories.

Shopping here is not as well developed as in Dubai. The city is visited for the sake of historical and natural attractions. But tourists here certainly will not be left without souvenirs, food, clothes and accessories.

The man-made wonders of the United Arab Emirates are so attractive in the eyes of tourists that they almost replaced the natural beauty of this country. Meanwhile, the warm sea and long semi-empty beaches, to which the hazy mountains of Jabar al-Hajar are added as a bonus, are easily found in the resort of Ras al-Khaimah - not the most popular, but charming in its own way.

This resort is suitable for you if you are waiting for peace from a family vacation and most of all dream of sunbathing on the seashore. More information about holidays with children in Ras al-Khaimah is in our review.

Ras Al Khaimah on the UAE map

The city of Ras al-Khaimah is the administrative center of the northernmost emirate, the sixth largest settlement in the UAE. The resort is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. The distance from Ras al-Khaimah to Abu Dhabi is 250 km, to Dubai - 113 km, to Sharjah - 92 km, to Umm al-Quwain - 63 km, to Fujairah - 113 km, to Al Ain - 234 km .

The city is divided into two parts by the bay. The main attractions are in the old city, in the west of Ras al-Khaimah. Historians claim that in the places where Ras al-Khaimah is located, the Armenians who fled from the Mongol invasion once settled.

Their settlement was called Julfa. The modern name (locals reduce it to RAK) in translation means "the top of the tent." This, apparently, hints at the gentle mountains that surrounded the city.

Vacation with children

Where is the noise, where are the skyscrapers, where are the amusement parks, where is the luxury? In Ras al-Khaimah, all this is not there - but there is lush vegetation, mountains in the distance and tranquility. If you are looking for a place to relax with a baby or two or three year old baby, not a better place in the UAE.

Ras al-Khaimah with children goes just to relax and spend time on the beach, sunbathing and swimming in the warm sea. The emirate cannot boast of other entertainment, but the modern Emirates Highway and an air-conditioned bus are the guarantee that in an hour you will find yourself in Dubai, full of wonders to the eyeballs.

However, vacation in Ras al-Khaimah will also appeal to adventurers. Learning how to manage a sailing yacht, make a desert safari, see a ghost town - is this a reason to get ready for a trip?

Another plus of Ras al-Khaimah for children - widespread use of the all-inclusive concept. The hotels serve European cuisine, so there is something for kids to be sure of.

Some hotels offer a children's menu. However, we advise you not to limit your meals to the hotel and try local dishes. Younger children can be offered desserts, while older ones can enjoy spicy Arabic dishes.

As in other UAE resorts, in Ras al-Khaimah it is important to choose the right time to relax with your child. More on this in the next section.

When is the best time to go?

The opening of the season in Ras al-Khaimah falls on the period when autumn comes to the cities of the middle lane. Summer unbearable heat is left behind, pleasant warmth comes.

The holiday season in Ras Al Khaimah lasts longer than other resorts in the UAE. It begins in September and ends only in May.

Tourists sunbathe on the Persian Gulf until the end of November. The winter months are also suitable for relaxing on the beach, only the sea becomes cold. The weather is favorable for walks and excursions: you can go to the desert or visit Dubai.

The beginning of spring is the time when the beaches are again filled with vacationers. Not too hot weather will last another two and a half months, and this time can be devoted to lazy reclining on soft sand and swimming in the sea, warm as fresh milk.

When deciding when to go to Ras al-Khaimah, make a choice in favor of spring or autumn, if you want a relaxing holiday. Winter is best for traveling around the country.

Weather and climate

The climate of Ras al-Khaimah is as hot as in other emirates, except that the air temperature can be 1-2 ° C lower. Summer is too sultry, but autumn, winter and spring are the best suited for a beach holiday with a child.

The season at the resort opens in the second half of September, when the air temperature drops to + 32 ° C.

In October, the temperature is kept at + 28-29 ° С, in November + 25-27 ° С. At the same time, the thermometer columns can rise up to + 30-34 ° С. It is advisable to come to Ras al-Khaimah with the baby by the end of autumn, when the heat is waning.

Winter is soft in the citywith warm weather. This is the only time of the year when it rains occasionally. Daytime temperature in December is + 26 ° С, in January-February + 24 ° С. If you are planning a vacation in Ras al-Khaimah at this time, be sure to take warm clothes: at dusk, the temperature drops to + 13-15 ° C.

With the advent of spring, the temperature rises again. Already in March, the air warms up to + 27-28 ° С, by April the air temperature will rise to + 32 ° С, which means that all the conditions for a better vacation in Ras al-Khaimah with children are formed. You can enjoy the beaches until mid-May. Then the temperature will exceed + 35 ° C, and in the summer it will be + 40 ° C.

Sea water temperature

"The water temperature off the coast of Ras al-Khaimah is + 23 ° C." Do you think this is a phrase from a summer weather forecast? Not at all: this sea temperature stays at the resort all winter, and in December it often happens + 25 ° С.

In March, the sea maintains winter temperatures, but already in April, the water temperature in Ras al-Khaimah reaches + 25 ° C, and in May + 28 ° C. In the hot summer months, the water becomes even warmer, up to + 32-33 ° C. With the advent of autumn, the sea hardly cools down: the water temperature is + 32 ° C in September, + 31 ° C in October and + 28 ° C in November.

Nutrition

The choice of where to stay in Ras al-Khaimah may well be influenced by the concept of food in the hotel. For many, a big plus of this resort is the widespread use of the all-inclusive system. At the same time, lunches and dinners outside the hotel restaurant will not be a risky event: there are many good catering establishments in the city.

Since there is no public transport in Ras al-Khaimah, taxis are in great demand. The resort has several taxi services, but not one of them installs meters in cars, so you have to bargain on the price. Traveling around Ras al-Khaimah is relatively inexpensive, around 10 AED. But moving between cities will cost 130-200 AED, depending on the distance.

In fairness, I must say that even in large cities in the UAE, tourists practically do not use public transport, preferring to take a taxi or rent a car.

Highlights

The colorful Ras al-Khaimah stretches for 18 km along the Persian Gulf, warm, affectionate and welcoming at any time of the year. It does not look like an urban, modern, magnificent Dubai, located just 80 km away, but is ready to offer its guests its own, no less interesting, opportunities for a pleasant, comfortable and fascinating pastime.

The city's spacious beaches with white sand are not crowded, although they are considered the best in the UAE, in popular tourist areas and malls there is no annoying fuss, and even in the local water park, one of the best in the country, there is a surprisingly calm atmosphere on weekdays. Ras al-Khaimah will not disappoint tourists who prefer outdoor activities: there are golf clubs, tennis, football, equestrian clubs, a yacht club where you can not only rent a sailing vessel and go on an exciting sea trip, but also learn the basics of navigation.

Ras al-Khaimah is full of culinary temptations, and the air itself is simply saturated with the stunning aromas of oriental spices and spices. Numerous restaurants and cafes of Ras al-Khaimah are always ready to offer their guests a menu designed for every taste and budget.

History and Modernity

The territory where the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah is located, with its fertile oases adjacent to the desert sand, picturesque mountains, the snow-white gentle shores of the warm Persian Gulf, is one of the oldest constantly inhabited regions on the planet. The earliest traces of human activity found on this earth date back to the fifth millennium BC. Umm al-Nar civilization, which flourished in Arabia in the third millennium BC, left here a memory of itself.

The city of Ras al-Khaimah, strategically well located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, dates back to at least the 7th century. The first written mention that a settlement and a large port were located in this place dates back to 695. Much later, a city was established here, known in medieval times as Julfar. Several years ago, the emir of Sharjah Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the most educated ruler in the UAE, the author of historical studies, confidently stated that Julfar was founded by immigrants from Armenia who lived in Persia and fled from there during the invasion of the Mongol army in the XIII century, and the name The city is of Armenian, not Arabian origin. Probably, he received his name in honor of the ancient Armenian city of Dzhug (or Dzhulf).

Over the following centuries, the city grew along the coastline, and by the 17th century, ancient Julfar had reached its peak. It was the main city of the region, divided today into the emirates of Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah. Local residents were engaged in fishing, cattle breeding, agriculture, pearl mining, which was the main export item.

At the beginning of the 18th century, piracy flourished in the Persian Gulf, and the coast of the Arabian Peninsula was often called the "Pirate Coast." By this time, the power of the al-Qashimi dynasty had consolidated here, the various branches of which rule in Ras al-Khaimah and Sharjah to this day. The clan had its own fleet, however, at the beginning of the XIX century. the British, who began active work in this region, began to systematically destroy it. In 1808, the naval battle of Ras al-Khaimah took place, in which the English fleet almost defeated the Arabs flotilla. The city and its environs were attacked by the British, many buildings were destroyed, including the fortifications of Fort Daya.

For a short period, the British occupied Ras al-Khaimah, and in 1820 a General Agreement was signed between Great Britain and the rulers of the Persian Gulf states, which provided for the prohibition of piracy and the slave trade that flourished on the Arabian Peninsula. The document laid the foundation for the British protectorate in this territory, which lasted until 1971. On February 10, 1972, the father of the current ruler of Ras al-Khaimah, Sheikh Sakr bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, signed a document on the incorporation of the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah into the new state - the UAE .

The emirate of Ras al-Khaimah cannot boast of significant hydrocarbon deposits, and its capital cannot be called a luxurious city: there are no such impressive skyscrapers as in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and people live much more modestly. Fishing, pearl mining, agriculture, which for a long time served as the basis of the emirate’s economy, have not lost their positions today. A significant part of the food products on the market of the entire united state comes from Ras al-Khaimah. At the same time, the industrial sector, the real estate market, tourism are developing here, innovative projects are being introduced.

Dozens of new companies are opened annually in the capital of the emirate. Running a business here is extremely profitable, since many types of activities are not subject to taxes and duties. In Ras al-Khaimah, there is a free trade zone - RAKEZ (RAK Economic Zone) and a permit to open companies with 100% foreign registered capital.

The authorities of Ras al-Khaimah are making remarkable efforts to stimulate the development of tourism: a luxurious 60-kilometer coast is being built here, new hotels, resort complexes, shopping and entertainment centers are being built. Many residents of Abu Dhabi and Dubai prefer to relax in Ras al-Khaimah. In fact, the emirate and its capital have excellent chances to become one of the main tourist destinations in the country.

Ras Al Khaimah Districts

The city of Ras al-Khaimah shares the bay of the same name. On the western shore there are old urban areas, on the eastern - a modern district called Al Nahil. These parts of the capital are connected by a large modern bridge, which can be overcome not only by car, but also on foot along specially equipped safe paths. A picturesque panorama of the city opens from the bridge.

In the old part of Ras al-Khaimah, there are residential buildings, educational institutions, several government institutions. There is also an ancient fort with watchtowers, the former residence of the emir, an area where archaeological excavations are carried out. In this historical district, the main and oldest market of Ras al-Khaimah, El Quwain, is still noisy and amazes with its exotic. Not far from it is the promenade, where locals like to relax.

In the modern, always lively Al Nahil district, the main state and municipal institutions, offices of commercial firms, shopping centers, and markets are concentrated. Closer to the coast stretches the most modern and most popular area among tourists - Al Hamra Marina with its magnificent snow-white beaches and green alleys. Here are hotels, large shops and souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and clubs. The pride of Al-Hamra is the Royal Yacht Club, where a sailing regatta is held annually.

Another iconic corner of the eastern part of Ras al-Khaimah is the Al-Kawashim city promenade, which stretches for almost 3 km from the bridge. Here you can have a good time strolling in the shade of tropical trees, have a bite to eat in one of the nice cafes or restaurants. For fans of sports on the promenade, there are running and cycling paths, and curious tourists will be interested to visit the Pearl Museum located here, which displays a magnificent collection of pearls of various sizes, shapes and colors.

Historical sights

The historical heritage of Ras al-Khaimah is presented in the National Museum, located in an old fort, within the walls of the former residence of the ruling al-Qashimi dynasty. The museum displays unique archaeological finds, the oldest of which are more than three thousand years old, manuscripts, historical documents, and a collection of weapons. Here you can admire antique jewelry made of pearls and silver, elegant ancient vessels, original mosaics. Many exhibits were donated to the museum by representatives of the al-Qashimi clan and ordinary residents of the emirate.

The residence building itself, with its walkways around the square perimeter, stairs, observation decks, massive doors leading to the former living quarters, looks rather modest, but its appearance retains the traditional Arabic ideas about the fortified castle. Inspecting the fort, climb the battlements of the ancient towers and admire the surrounding area.

The cost of visiting the National Museum is quite affordable - 5 dirhams.

Near the museum you will see the mosque of Mohammed ibn Salim - the largest surviving ancient mosque in the country.

The symbol of Ras al-Khaimah is Fort Daya, located on top of a rocky hill with a fantastic view of the Persian Gulf and the Khojar Mountains. The fort, erected in the XVI century, for centuries protected this land from attack from the sea. In 2004, fortifications made of unfired brick were restored, and today the fort is open for tourists. To get to it from the center of Ras al-Khaimah by car, it will take 10-15 minutes.

Beaches of Ras Al Khaimah

The beach season lasts in Ras al-Khaimah all year round, but the most comfortable time to relax is from October to April, because in the summer it is just as unbearably hot as in other emirates. The snow-white and spacious beaches of Ras al-Khaimah, where it is never as noisy and crowded as in Dubai, are considered by many to be the best in the UAE. Within the city there are both free beaches and paid, located on the territory of hotels and resorts.

Closed paid beaches are much better equipped than municipal ones, offering more opportunities for water sports. In such isolated coastal corners, recreational activities are often held that turn recreation into a holiday. Private beaches have a more relaxed atmosphere, but topless sunbathing and drinking alcohol openly is strictly prohibited everywhere.

Entertainment

In Ras al-Khaimah, there is one of the largest water parks in the country - Ice Land Water Park, which offers its guests more than 50 water attractions. Its highlight is a creative design, made in the Arctic theme, contrasting with the landscapes of hot Arabia surrounding this “icy” corner. Everything is arranged thoughtfully and tastefully here: an artificial 35-meter waterfall, falling in raging streams of water, pools, slides, a game area with a football field, cozy cafes where you can taste traditional Arabic dishes.

The cost of a ticket to the water park is 175 dirhams for an adult, 110 dirhams for a child. For babies whose height does not exceed 80 cm, admission is free. For the use of cabin for things you will need to pay separately.

Another great place for family vacations is the huge Sacre city park. In this green, well-kept corner of Ras al-Khaimah, you can ride a mini-train, electric car, or take a trip through its territory, riding a horse, pony or camel. For children there are playgrounds with attractions. The park has several cozy restaurants with very attractive prices.

In the port of Ras al-Khaimah, you can rent a motor boat and go on a sea voyage. Many tourists combine such cruises with fishing. The catch can be very impressive and include barracuda, king mackerel, tuna, cobia, hammur. A six-hour boat trip for 6 people will cost around 2500 dirhams. This amount includes a transfer from the hotel and back, as well as equipment and gear necessary for fishing.

The resort has two golf clubs: Tower Links (18 holes) and Al-Hamra (9 holes), both of which are located outside the city limits.

Most hotels organize desert safaris. Tourists travel on ATVs, jeeps or camels. During the trip, you have the opportunity to visit the Bedouin camps and get acquainted with the traditional way of life of nomads. Here you can taste traditional Arabic cuisine, see authentic dances, listen to a kind of music. Many travelers stay in the camp overnight to meet the dawn in the desert.

If you rest in Ras al-Khaimah from October to March, one of the Fridays early in the morning head to the Al Sawan Racecourse. Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy an incredibly spectacular spectacle - a real camel race. The Ras al-Khaimah track is one of the best in the UAE.

Excursions

Many historical and natural attractions are located outside the capital of the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, and once you are here, it is absolutely necessary to get acquainted with some of them. One of the most famous and mysterious places is located 18 km from the center of Ras al-Khaimah, right on the coast. This is the abandoned fishing village of Al-Jazeera al-Hamra, which is called a ghost town. The settlement was founded in the IV century, and people lived in it before the 30s of the last century. Here, everything looks like it was many centuries ago: a market, watchtowers, a ruined fort, mosques, houses built of coral stone. This mysterious place preserves the atmosphere of authentic Arab life, and it seems that the common legend about the genies who settled in abandoned houses is not a fiction at all.

To the north of Ras al-Khaimah, near the Hajar Mountains, is the most important archaeological area of the UAE. Here, near the village of Shamal Jalfar, during excavations, hundreds of tombs of the pre-Islamic period and traces of settlements from 2000-1300 were discovered. BC e.

The most beautiful landscapes will open to you if you go on a trip to the Hajar mountains themselves. One of the most spectacular places is Wadi Bi Canyon, located at an altitude of 1 km above sea level. For lovers of hiking and trekking, it will be tempting to climb Mount Jebel Jays, whose height is 1934 m. During the ascent, more and more panoramic views will open before the travelers, demonstrating the beauty of the emirate spread out at their feet. Those who wish to spend the night in the mountains can stay in one of the specially equipped campgrounds to enjoy the starry sky above Ras al-Khaimah.

At the foot of the Hajar Mountains is the town of Hatta, famous for its hot mineral springs, from which water flows into the pool, where you can take healing baths. It features massage rooms and a spa.

Shopping

There are four major shopping centers in Ras Al Khaimah: Manar Mall, RAK Mall, Al Hamra Mall, Safeer Mall. Here you can buy anything, from fruits, both local and brought from all over the globe, to carpets and furniture. Almost every hotel organizes bus trips to malls.

Original products made by local manufacturers can be purchased from the RAK Cooparative Store.

For souvenirs in oriental style, head to the old city and stroll through the main market. Here you can get interesting trinkets, as well as purchase original handmade jewelry or a pretty stylized Arabian outfit. Prices in Ras Al Khaimah markets are significantly lower than in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

There are many Indian shops in the Al Nahil area, which also sell pretty oriental gizmos.

National cuisine

In Ras al-Khaimah, culinary attractions will await you at every turn. Tasty here they cook everywhere: in a small cafe on the waterfront, and in the elegant restaurant of a five-star hotel. Local cuisine can be found in one of the many Arabian restaurants. Actually, Lebanese culinary products, corrected by some Arab and Indian influences, are often considered traditional food here. As a rule, the menu of such restaurants includes traditional Lebanese mezze (hummus, mutabal, salads, falafel), kebabs, lamb, fish or lamb. Those who have visited Ras al-Khaimah more than once know that one of the best such establishments is located on Al-Kawashim embankment. The restaurant is called Yansoon. The prices here are quite moderate, and if you sit on its upper terrace, you can at the same time admire the magnificent panoramas, especially in the evening.

On the same promenade there are several atmospheric Shisha’s café’s - traditional establishments for the Emirates, where aromatic tobacco lovers will be pleased to smoke a hookah.

There are many great Indian restaurants in Ras Al Khaimah, and each of them offers at least one vegetarian option. There are exclusively vegetarian restaurants and inexpensive Indian cafes in the city.

Italian restaurants prepare excellent pizza and pasta, one of the best is the restaurant "Pesto". If you want to treat yourself to delicious crab meat rolls, head to the UMI Japanese restaurant. And for lovers of a tight lunch or dinner, you can advise visiting the restaurant with the real Brazilian cuisine Pura Vida - here guests will find huge portions of fried meat: beef, lamb or poultry.

In Ras al-Khaimah, there are all the famous international fast food chains. In addition, there are numerous local establishments representing this segment.

Arabic coffee, traditional strong tea, freshly squeezed juices will be served at any restaurant or cafe, but you can accompany meals with alcoholic drinks only in establishments located on the hotel premises. By the way, there are several shops in Ras al-Khaimah where you can buy strong drinks, but it is forbidden to drink them in public places by law. His violation may result in a fine or even imprisonment.

Hotels

There are not so many hotels in Ras al-Khaimah yet, but they represent all the categories most common in the UAE: from three to five “stars”. In terms of price / quality ratio, local hotels win in comparison with Dubai. The cost of living in a four-star hotel in Ras al-Khaimah and Dubai is approximately the same, but in the first case it will be located on the first line and have its own beach, and in the second - you will have to get to the beach by taxi or bus.

Ras al-Khaimah hotels are not concentrated in a separate zone, but are scattered throughout the city and are located at different distances from the coast. Almost half of them have already implemented the all inclusive system, which is not very readily welcomed by other emirates.

The most luxurious and famous hotels here are the Waldorf Astoria, located on the coast, and the new The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, built in an oasis in the heart of the desert.

From budget three-star hotels we can distinguish Al Nakheel Hotel Apartments, SH Hotel, Tulip Inn Ras Al Khaimah.

Transport

Ras al-Khaimah is a small city, and it would be quite possible to move on foot, but walking along the streets is not customary here. The absence of sidewalks and “zebras” at the crossings makes such walks unsafe. The main vehicle in the city is a taxi. All cars are equipped with counters, the car can be called by phone or stopped right on the street.

The bus service, which is controlled by the RAK transport service, connects the capital of the emirate with other large settlements, as well as the main cities of other emirates, and international airports of the country.

Buses depart from the bus station opposite the Cove Rotana Hotel, close to the main police station of Ras al-Khaimah. They depart every hour, usually from 7:00 to 20:00. A trip to the capital of the emirate of Umm al-Qaiwain will cost 10 dirhams, Ajman - 15 dirhams, the cost of travel to Sharjah and Dubai is 25 dirhams.

Most major hotels provide their guests with their own buses to travel around the country. The price may be included in the price of the tour, otherwise you will have to pay for the transfer on the spot.

Renting a car in Ras al-Khaimah is not difficult. Most hotels will offer you the services of all renowned international car rental companies. In the city itself, the doors of offices of local companies providing the same services, but at a lower price, are open for tourists.
