Several years ago, the emir of Sharjah Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the most educated ruler in the UAE, the author of historical studies, confidently stated that Julfar was founded by immigrants from Armenia who lived in Persia and fled from there during the invasion of the Mongol army in the XIII century, and the name The city is of Armenian, not Arabian origin. Probably, he received his name in honor of the ancient Armenian city of Dzhug (or Dzhulf).
Over the following centuries, the city grew along the coastline, and by the 17th century, ancient Julfar had reached its peak. The clan had its own fleet, however, at the beginning of the XIX century. the British, who began active work in this region, began to systematically destroy it. In 1808, the naval battle of Ras al-Khaimah took place, in which the English fleet almost defeated the Arabs flotilla. The city and its environs were attacked by the British, many buildings were destroyed, including the fortifications of Fort Daya.
For a short period, the British occupied Ras al-Khaimah, and in 1820 a General Agreement was signed between Great Britain and the rulers of the Persian Gulf states, which provided for the prohibition of piracy and the slave trade that flourished on the Arabian Peninsula. The document laid the foundation for the British protectorate in this territory, which lasted until 1971. On February 10, 1972, the father of the current ruler of Ras al-Khaimah, Sheikh Sakr bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, signed a document on the incorporation of the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah into the new state - the UAE .
