The stone city. Sights of the Perm region

One of the main attractions of the Perm region. It has become especially popular in the last decade (in the old guidebooks there is not even a mention of it), and due to transport accessibility, groups of tourists visit the territory of the natural city every weekend. It was the tourists who gave this place such a name. Another, much older name for the Stone Town is the Devil's Hillfort, and locals simply call it Turtles.

A stone city is a complex of huge stones arranged in such a way that gives the impression of a city. And everything here seems to be real: and narrow streets, and wide avenues, and blind alleys, and the square, and arch-gates to the city. You can wander around such a city for hours, you can even get lost if you get here for the first time.

Their inhabitants also live in the Stone Town: Big and Small Turtles, a Feathered Guard, a Rat, a Seal, Idols and others. Stone boulders got this name for their unusual resemblance to these animals and are considered to be symbols of the Stone City.

Legend of Stone Town

How did the Stone Town come about? There is a legend that a long time ago there was a city of amazing beauty on this place. It bloomed and developed. And beautiful and kind people lived here. But the king of this city had a blind daughter, she alone could not see the beauty of the place where she lives. The evil sorcerer offered the king a cure for his daughter, and the king agreed. But as soon as the princess could see, at that very moment the sorcerer turned all the houses, streets and inhabitants into stone. And the young princess was left only to admire the beautiful, but stone city ...

Origin of the Stone Town

The legend, of course, is beautiful, but scientists believe that the so-called streets of the Stone Town were formed due to the fact that a river flowed here millions of years ago. It was she who struck the streets and arches.

The stone city is located at the top of the Rudyansky Spoi ridge (526 m). The rocks consist of fine-grained quartz sandstone of the Lower Carboniferous. The rock massif is cut through by numerous deep cracks (up to 8-12 meters). Water, wind, glacier and geological epochs worked on the appearance of the Ural Mountains, creating an unusual complex.

From the heights of the rocks of the Stone Town, an unforgettable view of the "green ocean" of the Ural taiga opens.

Big and Small cities

The ancient settlement is divided into Big and Small cities. Small Stone Town is located 200-300 meters east of the Big. It can be quite difficult to find, since the path to it is not very obvious. It consists of only four remnants, who are actually no less interesting than their older brothers, especially the Leaky Stone and the Alkali.

In 2008, the Stone Town received the status of a landscape monument of nature of the Perm Territory.

Visit Features

The end of August and the beginning of autumn is a time of influx of a large number of tourists. The stone city is especially beautiful in the fall, during a riot of bright colors.

The boyar became terrified - and you will not refuse, and it’s a pity to give the daughter to the unclean. I decided to ask the impossible task — to build stone chambers of indescribable beauty one night before the first cock-cry .. The devil whistled — and huge stones flew, and began to take shape in the houses themselves. And I would have time to build the devil of the house, but the girl saw and let the rooster slow down, pull its feathers. I could not stand the cock for myself such an attitude, screamed in the middle of the night. I lost the devil in the underworld, and the unfinished city remained in the taiga.

Video about Stone Town

Stone City   - one of the main attractions of the Perm region. It is located at a distance of 6 kilometers from the village of Usva. Another name for these rocks is Devil's Hillfort. Locals usually call them Turtles.

Once, millions of years ago, the waters of the Perm Sea splashed here, which, retreating, left behind an amazing phenomenon - the spur of the Ural Ridge.

If you believe   legend, then once upon a time, a rich city stood here - beautiful people lived in it, building beautiful houses and doing beautiful deeds. And everything would be fine, but only the ruler of the city could not rejoice at all of this - his daughter was blind and could not see in what wonderful place she lives ... Once the ruler turned to the sorcerer to ask him to return his daughter’s eyesight. The sorcerer agreed, but with only one condition - the city will be turned to stone. The ruler agreed to everything, and the magician kept his word. But instead of the city, the girl saw stone blocks ...

Who built the Devil's Hillfort?

Stone city   - a purely natural creation. But it looks as if it’s all someone built on purpose. There are gates with arches, and a large central square, spacious avenues and narrow alleys, there are also dead ends. Devil's hillfort is famous for its unusual form of outlier rocks. Scientists suggest that such bizarre forms appeared under the influence of the fast waters of a mountain river, which flowed here several million years ago. And then the mountains rose higher, forming the Rudyansky Spoy ridge, and the river disappeared.

Rocks are composed of fine-grained quartz sandstone. The rock massif is cut through by numerous deep cracks (up to 8-12 meters). The width of the cracks is from 1 to 8 meters. Thanks to this, the outlines of the rocks and cracks in them are very reminiscent of the houses and streets of the old, abandoned city.

The giant stone reserve is conditionally divided into Big and   Small city . It has its own streets (and even the avenue - the largest crack between the rocks with sheer walls 8 meters high). In the Big City are located the two highest remnants, called, due to its similarity with animals in shape, Big and   Little Turtles .

Numerous streets, trails, alleys and dead-ends of the city are dragging out, like a huge maze from which there is no desire to get out. Those who dare to climb one of the peaks have an amazing view of the surrounding territories. It is very beautiful here on sunny autumn days, when the forest and the field around are covered with gold and from the height of the rocks a person feels like a real crown of nature.

Kamenny Gorod is popular with climbers - annually competitions are held here between employees of the Ministry of Emergencies and local cavers. The number of tourists visiting an amazing monument is constantly growing - and there is a simple explanation hidden in the incredible beauty and originality of this amazing place.
