Resort center of Costa Brava

Lloret de Mar is a party town on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. A developed tourist infrastructure with many bars and discos, picturesque landscapes, well-groomed beaches, and close proximity to Barcelona have made this resort popular among tourists.

“The resort is good. The beaches are clean. Public transport runs regularly. Prices in supermarkets and cafes are low. Set lunch with drink - 10 euros. Table wine in the store - 2-4 euros. Everyone enjoys life and relaxes. Walk down the street even in a swimsuit - no one will look askance.”

Nearest cities and airports

Here are some landmarks with distance:

  • Barcelona - 75 km;
  • Girona - 30 km;
  • French border - 100 km.

Host airports - Girona, Reus.

From the airports you can get to the resort by taxi, rental car, bus or train.

The resort can be reached by bus or car.

“We chose Lloret de Mar as the starting point on our travels. The only inconvenient thing is that there is no direct train connection to the resort. From Barcelona you need to take a train to Blanes for about 1.5 hours, and then change to a bus and drive another 20 minutes. It’s more convenient to take a direct bus from Barcelona.”

If you would like to travel independently from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar and back, then read our recommendations. You will find a lot of useful information in them and learn what you need to pay attention to while traveling in Spain.

Climate

Lloret de Mar, like the entire Costa Brava, differs from other resorts in Spain in its cooler climate. The tourist season here lasts from May to October, when the thermometer remains at 25-28°C. Comfortable months for swimming in the sea are from the second half of June to the first half of September.

Temperature forecast for the tourist season in Lloret de Mar.

“We always go on holiday at the end of the season. We arrived in Costa Brava in October. Lloret de Mar was already completely empty, which made me feel sad at times. The weather let us down: out of 14 days, only 4 were sunny and hot.”

“We arrived in Lloret de Mar at the beginning of June. It was too early for swimming. So we took a car and took a tour of Spain. We also swam in the sea, but at the end of the vacation, when the water warmed up a little.”

Beaches

The central part of the resort is centered around the long (1.5 km) but narrow (40 m) municipal beach of Lloret. Nearby, the calmer Fenals beach stretches 750 meters along the coast. There are also small beaches Sa Boadella, Santa Christina, Canyelles. All of them are equipped with showers and changing cabins, you can rent a sun lounger and umbrella (5 euros). There are conditions for windsurfing and parasailing here, and pedal boat rentals are available.

There are many vacationers on clean and well-kept beaches.

“The beach has very coarse sand, it is easy to shake off and does not leave dirt. The entry into the sea is smooth, but after 50-100 meters it becomes very deep and a strong current appears. I do not recommend this place to families with children.”

“We often went to Sa Boadella beach. It is small, surrounded by rocks and pine trees. Very beautiful! There are nudists sunbathing at the far end of the beach.”

Sa Boadella beach is surrounded by forest and cliffs.

Rental of property

Lloret de Mar is a budget resort with no frills and luxurious service. Mostly three-star hotels operate here, which are standard buildings with a small area and a swimming pool. You can also rent apartments. Fenals is considered a fashionable area of the city. We invite you to take a virtual walk through its streets.

“The center seemed very noisy to me. And there is nothing there that is worth settling for: no shopping, no attractions, no authentic restaurants. Therefore, we rented an apartment in the new Fenals area on the outskirts. Very neat, quiet, green area with nice buildings. All around are picturesque landscapes, a long embankment, and a pine grove. There are supermarkets, restaurants and cafes. We walked to the center of the resort, about 10-15 minutes.”

Entertainment

One of the favorite places of entertainment for children and adults is the gnome park.

“Lots of cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs everywhere. Prices are very, very affordable, even at the current euro exchange rate. Russian speech is understood everywhere. The restaurants serve delicious food, and almost everywhere there are great deals on set lunches. I liked it at La Parilla. The portions are huge, and they also bring compliments from the establishment. You can go to the Gran Casino for flamenco.”

“Pleasure boats depart from the central beach to neighboring Tossa de Mar, Blanes and back. A round-trip ticket costs 15 euros, the sailing time is about 50 minutes. I advise you to take a trip to Tossa and get acquainted with the flavor of Mediterranean Europe.”

Picturesque Tossa de Mar.

“One of the features of the resort is the largest water park in the Costa Brava, Water World. There are a lot of slides and other water activities for adrenaline junkies. The coolest one is the diving tower. There is a separate playground for children - a whole island. There are cafes and you can sunbathe or have a picnic on the lawns. So I advise you to go and have fun for the whole day. We paid 65 euros for a family ticket (2 adults + child). You can get there by free bus from the bus station.”

Attractions

Tourist, lacking polish and authenticity, Lloret de Mar is, however, proud of its thousand-year history. A small fishing village that has grown into a famous resort has its own treasures.

A 10-minute walk from one of the main beaches of Lloret de Mar is this secluded place - Cala dels Frares.

Castle of Sant Joan

Medieval defensive fortress of the 11th century.

Fortress of Sant Joan.

“Perhaps this is the main architectural attraction and decoration of Lloret de Mar. The castle is built on a hill, with a pedestrian road running along it in the rock. Climb up to take photos and view the wonderful seascape. There is a fee to enter the castle, but there is nothing inside except a spiral staircase. Another symbol of Lloret is the modern private castle Castel d’en Plaj.”

Gardens of Saint Clotilde

National treasure of Catalonia. The Renaissance style garden was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the Marquis Roviralt in honor of his late wife.

Marble angels in the pond of the Santa Clotilde garden.

Alevtina:

“Be sure to take a walk through the wonderful park. The ticket costs 5 euros, but it will more than pay for itself. By the way, my husband and I were offered a discount at the checkout, taking into account our retirement age. A very well-kept old park with many levels, secluded corners, interesting sculptures, and fountains. It's so nice to escape the midday heat here. From above you get great photos of seascapes. One caveat - the park is on a slope, there are a lot of stairs.”

Statue of Donna Marinerra (fisherwoman)

Bronze sculpture from 1966 by Ernest Maragall. Installed on a rocky hill above the sea in honor of the wives of sailors.

The statue of a woman is imbued with anticipation and concern for those at sea.

Olya:

“Previously, the entire male population of Lloret was engaged in fishing. A very touching sculpture conveys the anxiety and hope with which the sailors’ wives went out to the sea and peered into the horizon.”

Modernist cemetery

The peace of the dead is protected by statues.

“I’ve never visited cemeteries on vacation, but after reading the reviews, I decided to take a look. You could say this is an open-air museum. Monuments on the graves of noble people were made by famous architects. Each tombstone not only contains the name of the person buried, but also indicates the architect or sculptor who designed the burial.”

The Salvador Dali Theater-Museum is a place where all the exhibits evoke conflicting feelings. A place thoroughly saturated with the spirit of adoration and worship of the genius Dali to his muse - his wife Gala.

“I liked two trips most of all - to and to. We got to the museum on our own by bus with a transfer in Girona. To visit the monastery, we first went to Barcelona, and from there by train to Montserrat. Both trips on public transport were very tiring. If finances allow, it’s better to take a tour or a taxi.”

Shopping

“You can’t buy anything in Lloret de Mar except magnets. For brands, it is worth going to the La Rocca Village outlet, which is halfway to Barcelona. This can be done by car or by purchasing an excursion from a tour operator. The operator issues coupons with a ten percent discount and an outlet card.”

“We went shopping in Andorra. We left at 5 am and returned around 9 pm. The bus dropped us off in the capital of the principality, where stores of famous European brands are located. Prices are lower than in Barcelona."

Drawing conclusions

Lloret de Mar resort will receive your positive review if:

  • natural beauty is more important to you than urban architecture;
  • are you ready to save on luxury services;
  • active nightlife is an essential part of your holiday;
  • you plan to travel a lot.

Lloret de Mar from a bird's eye view.

Lloret de Mar: Real Spain or Resort Spain? The most popular city on the Costa Brava in detail: where to stay, what to see, and which beach is the best?

Europe, and indeed abroad, began for us precisely from this party place in Spain.

Lloret de Mar perfectly coincided with our input data: Schengen in the passport, a couple of hundred euros in the pocket and a burning fuse to relax brightly and see sunny Spain.

The history of the former fishing village of Lloret de Mar in Spain continues today, primarily as a beach resort.

Real life here begins after dark: the city has more than 400 bars, restaurants and clubs, each of which strives to stand out with an original program and entice tourists with more cocktails :) World-famous DJs, music from the 80s and 90s, salsa motifs, laser shows and themed parties - there is no limit to the entertainment madness. Therefore, mainly the youth contingent comes from all over Europe. By the way, the Germans admiringly call Lloret de Mar the second Spanish Ibiza.

Surprisingly, frequent guests here are also retirees, who are attracted by inexpensive hotels - good “threes” - and the Mediterranean Sea. By the way, we also vacationed in 3 stars. Family holidays with children, as practice shows, are also relevant, but only when living in a quiet part of the city near Fenals beach (Platja de Fenals). There is a choice of 4-5* all-inclusive hotels, which is ideal for traveling with a child.

Lloret de Mar is definitely worth a visit to Spain for three reasons:

  1. Relaxed pace of life on the beach. During the day everyone relaxes by the sea, at night they flock to nightclubs along the coast.
  2. The city is convenient as a starting point for trips to completely different destinations: shopping outlets, Girona, Barcelona, Andorra and even France.
  3. Well, and the main thing is that vacationing here is much cheaper!

Weather in Lloret de Mar - when is the best time to go?

When is the best time to go to Lloret de Mar? The high season, in theory, lasts from May to October. In fact, the peak of tourist pilgrimage occurs in July-August. We went on a tour in early May, it’s cool to swim at this time, but for walking and lying on the beach the ideal temperature is +20 degrees Celsius. Therefore, we enjoyed our visit to Andorra, Montserrat, Barcelona and Girona doubly :)

The autumn and spring months are not very popular, either the water does not warm up or the rain gets wet. However, the weather in Lloret de Mar is conducive to beach holidays even during these “unclaimed” periods. On the contrary, we advised going at this time - tours are much cheaper :) The climate in the region is very mild: in winter the air temperature, even at night, practically never drops below +10°C, and in summer you rarely see more than +28°C on the thermometer. Although on our trip on our own in 2017 it was more than +30°C. It doesn't happen once at a time. We also went to Barcelona in May 2018 and the weather was great! (+21..+24°C)

In principle, everyone sets their own priorities, but, in our opinion, to fully enjoy the picturesque nature of Lloret de Mar - bays with rocks protruding from emerald water, green hills, pine forests - and Spain as a whole will be possible during the initial and final periods season.

Where to buy tours to Spain? (Costa Brava)

We went on a tour, and at that time it cost a ridiculous amount - about 20,000 rubles per person for 7 days. Then we went to agencies looking for the cheapest tours; there were no online booking sites. In 2020, the price tag is slightly higher, but the best deals can now be found online yourself:

Firstly, the best offers from all tour operators are collected on one website (like Booking). Secondly, there is no extra charge for the work of a travel agent/renting premises/cookies for the office. Thirdly, you are the master of your choice, protected from the skillful pressure of third parties :) Read honest reviews about hotels, look at the photos and decide whether to take it or look further. Often, after seeing a tour on the agency’s website and coming to their office, such a price is no longer found. There is no problem with this online.

Tours to Lloret de Mar in 2020 cost an average of 48,000 rubles per week for two, subject to early booking at least 2 months in advance.

You can count on last-minute tours to the Costa Brava, but, of course, closer to the height of the hot season (July-August). By the way, you can buy a tour to Spain before the start of the season in May even cheaper.

Attractions in Lloret de Mar

What to see in Lloret de Mar? Sightseeing tours will undoubtedly offer a rich program, but you probably know how it usually happens. If not at a gallop across Europe, then with delivery to all sorts of places to raise money :)

It's easy to build your route. In this particular corner of Spain, first of all, it is worth seeing the symbol of the city - the Castell de Sant Joan castle, located on a hill. Also worthy of attention are the picturesque gardens by the sea of Saint Clotilde, the unusual cemetery (Modernist Cemetery), where you can see the real Catalan Art Nouveau style of many family crypts and tombstones, and the Maritime Museum in a mansion on the city embankment. You will also be interested in the “Cat House” - a unique museum dedicated to purring animals.

Regarding the surrounding area:

  • Monastery of Montserrat with the Black Madonna- the patroness of Catalonia, rising on mountains of amazing shape. Here we climbed up the hiking trails and saw the monastery from the top of the mountains. There is fresh mountain air at the top :)

A little advice: it is better to look for Russian tour guides on the spot, not from a travel agency. If you are alone, then you can team up with other tourists and go explore places in comfortable conditions in the 4th-6th, and it will be easier to decide to leave faster or stay)

First trip abroad

  • – an hour's drive from Lloret de Mar by bus. We went there for 1 day on our own without guides. We walked around the city and sat in a cafe. A one-way bus ticket then cost around 3-5 euros.

I went for 10 euros round trip to Girona

  • Andorra– it is also beneficial to go here with a personal guide by car (you can use the same one with whom you went to Montserrat). Ideal for shopping, walking with mountain views. My friends really liked it, but they left about 300 euros there, having bought a lot of good clothes.
  • – we went to the capital of Catalonia on a tour from the hotel, I don’t remember the exact cost, but next time I would also gather a group and rent a car. I remember that the bus was not very convenient, you are very dependent on other groups and you are afraid of being late and being left alone. 🙂 We advise anyone to go to Barcelona for at least 1-3 days, now it is our favorite city.

On our first trip, Park Güell was still free

  • Port Aventura- a must-visit place if you love amusement parks. So far, we have visited, this is the best and cheapest park in the world :) In the same Universal Studio (we were in Los Angeles) there is no such thing. Then (in 2013) a ticket cost about 23 euros, now from 55 euros per adult (though it’s worth noting that Ferrari Land was added). Be sure to take a ride to Shambhala. We rode it 2 times.
  • Church of Sant Romà (Sant Roma) in the Catalan Gothic style
  • theater-museum of the genius of surrealism Salvador Dali in Figueres and Pubol Castle(Gala-Dali)

With children you can also go to Water Park, Marineland water park or look at the animals in the Aqualeon mini-zoo.

In Spain, tourists will also be interested in numerous sculptures, fascinating with their monumentality. Don’t forget to make a wish at the fisherman’s monument, and it will definitely come true. Donna Marinera is installed at the end of the Central Beach, and nearby there is a magnificent observation deck.

Excursions from Lloret de Mar

We will list the most popular excursions and indicate approximate prices from local travel agencies to make it easier for you to navigate. Of course, the tour operator will charge an order of magnitude more for a similar trip.

Where can you go on an organized trip from Lloret de Mar?

  • Girona and Salvador Dali Museum – €45-50
  • Sightseeing tour of Barcelona – €35-45 + entrance to the Sagrada €22

For comparison: the tour operator costs €100 for this excursion

  • Montserrat – €50-55
  • Port Aventura Amusement Park – €63-65 (transfer and entrance fee)
  • Andorra – €55-65
  • South of France (Colliour and Perpignan) – €50-55
  • 2-day trip to France (Nice, Monaco, San Remo and Cannes) – €215-225

If you get to Barcelona/Girona on your own, and still need a tour of the area, then this is a treasure trove of all cool excursions in Russian. Look ↓

What to do besides sightseeing in Lloret de Mar? Spain is traditionally loved for its sea waves and sun!

First trip to Europe (Lloret de Mar)

The beaches of the Costa Brava are officially recognized as some of the best in the world. The most popular of them:

  • The central beach of Lloret de Mar, 1630 m long (it’s in the photo). The noisiest, most crowded and disturbing the surrounding hotels at night
  • the second largest is Fenals beach, surrounded by pine forest and especially visited by Russian tourists. Here the situation is calmer, and the beach itself is clean and well-groomed
  • especially beautiful and secluded - Sa Boadeia beach - with a “children’s” area in one part and a nudist area in the other
  • cozy beach located on the way to Blanes - Santa Cristina
  • beach in the picturesque bay of Sa Caleta near the Central Beach.

The weather in Lloret de Mar allows you to go to the beaches and “get” a golden tan in the spring, but it is better to wait until the end of May or beginning of June with swimming.
The price for an umbrella and sunbed is €14 (7+7).

The best resort hotels

Where to stay? We have made a selection of good hotels in the resort. Regarding “all inclusive” and Lloret de Mar: Spain is not generally famous for its quality and adequate cost of all inclusive (except for Mallorca), so it is better to choose the good old half board (breakfast and dinner) or full board (3 meals a day) .

Please note that the price is for a tour for two during the season for 7 nights with departure from Moscow.

Tour: from 67,000 rubles

Due to its comfortable climate and developed infrastructure, this city is often called the second Ibiza, but the cost of a holiday here is an order of magnitude lower than in other Spanish resorts. Located an hour's drive from the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia, it has a centuries-old history that locals will be happy to tell you about.

A little history

Initially, the territory was inhabited by ancient tribes of Iberians, and later Roman soldiers settled here. New residents turned the settlement into a trading center, establishing connections with other cities. The first mention of the settlement dates back to 966 AD.

The fishing village, which turned into a large city, flourished throughout its existence. In the 18th century, the first rich people built palaces that surprised people with their special luxury.

The economic prosperity of Lloret de Mar (Spain) continued until the 20th century, and many years of stagnation ended in 1950 thanks to the tourism business. The charming city, welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests, creates all the conditions for a comfortable stay.

Climate

The most visited tourist center of the Costa Brava, covering an area of about 48 square meters, boasts a mild climate. The average air temperature is about 27 degrees in summer, and in winter - no more than 10. The weather does not present any unpleasant surprises because the mountains protect the coast from the piercing wind. Therefore, tourists rush to the resort all year round, although the official beach season begins in May and ends in October.

Resort specifics

Judging by the reviews of guests, they are attracted by the well-maintained and incredibly picturesque beaches for which (Spain) is famous, which has its own specifics, which future travelers should know about. The colorful city is called the youth capital of the country, and the large number of boys and girls among the vacationers will confirm this.

Local authorities know the features of the resort, so the beaches are equipped with paraphernalia for active recreation, and the Porto Pi ship always runs along the coast, which all young guests of the city strive to get on to have a great time at a fun disco on the open sea.

The main attraction of the city

Stretching for nine kilometers, the snow-white beaches have received an international award for high quality standards. The ideal cleanliness of the bottom and shore pleasantly surprises even the most demanding tourists. The beaches of Lloret de Mar are mostly free, but you will have to pay a certain amount of money to rent equipment. Everywhere is full of attractions where you can have fun alone or with children; in addition, connoisseurs of extreme recreation on the water will not be left out.

Most popular beach

Even without leaving the city limits, tourists can get to the most famous sandy beach on the coast, stretching one and a half kilometers in length - Lloret de Mar beach. Vacationers are warned that it is quite deep here, and even experienced athletes are not recommended to swim further than 50 meters.

The popular Lloret beach is extremely crowded, and city residents avoid it, choosing more secluded places for their holidays.

Holidays for every taste

Another beach beloved by tourists is La Caleta. An unusually picturesque corner is suitable for those who dream of a relaxing pastime. The purest sand without a single stone, complete absence of garbage and strong waves will appeal to couples with children and lovers.

But the bays surrounded by rocks, where there are no people at all, are chosen by lovers of tent holidays. Not only tourists who enjoy stunning sunsets and sunrises come to desert corners, but also Spaniards in large groups.

It’s not for nothing that they say that every vacationer will have a good time at the resort, and there will be entertainment for every taste and budget.

Another advantage of the sunny city is the large number of hotels located along the coast, so all guests are provided with a beautiful view from their windows. Comfortable apartments will delight wealthy tourists, while students choose cheap hostels with a good level of service.

Perhaps one of the most famous hotels located in the heart of the city is the three-star Palm Beach. Lloret de Mar (Spain) is proud that even budget establishments offer a wide range of services, and Palm Beach is no exception. The hotel, which has 153 rooms, is famous for its luxurious swimming pools, jacuzzi, Turkish bath, excellent gym and much more. Operating on an all-inclusive basis, it is in incredible demand, so tourists book their holidays here in advance.

Guests of the city have a wonderful opportunity to rent an apartment for several days without intermediaries for 55 euros per night or a luxurious villa for eight people for 190 euros per day. For large companies, such options are extremely convenient, and the cost of living will be much lower than in any hotel.

Picturesque gardens

The ancient city, rich in attractions, will delight all tourists. Natural and man-made monuments, famous for their diversity, will remain in the memory of visitors forever.

On the outskirts of the city of Lloret de Mar hides an amazing park, considered a national treasure of Catalonia. Made in the Renaissance style, the “Gardens of Saint Clotilde” evoke admiration among everyone who finds themselves in a natural wonder. A perfectly preserved masterpiece, it was built with only one purpose - to show the complete fusion of man with nature. Located on a cliff, the landscaped Gardens Santa Clotilde amaze with unforgettable landscapes and harmony reigning everywhere.

The ticket price is 5 euros, and this is a very small price to pay to see with your own eyes the elegant and luxurious botanical garden, which immortalizes the amazing beauty of Catalonia.

Unique water park

City guests dreaming of a memorable vacation go to the modern water park “Water World,” which is popular with all foreigners. Tourists are warned that small children in the establishment will have to be closely monitored to avoid injury, and if it is possible to leave them at the hotel, it is better not to neglect this recommendation.

The cost of a ticket for one person at the box office is about $30, but if you order it online, you can save a lot and get a pass for the second day completely free.

The attractions of one of the largest water parks in Europe are exciting, and many are truly unique. Speed slides with whirlpools, descent in pitch darkness from the height of a 70-story building, pools with artificially created waves will cause a real adrenaline rush. There is also entertainment for those who are not into extreme sports, which is why Parc Aquàtic WaterWorld is chosen by different age categories.

Unusual cemetery

The Modernist Cemetery, which is open every day, will surprise you with its special atmosphere, where there is no place for despondency and grief. Catalans bury their relatives in beautiful family crypts that you can admire. The real architectural monuments made in the Art Nouveau style that appeared in the 19th-20th centuries look unusual, and the necropolis, with the absence of obvious signs of a cemetery, is not for nothing called an open-air museum.

The symbol of the city

A bronze sculpture on a remote beach attracts thousands of visitors to Lloret de Mar. The monument to a wife seeing off her beloved sailor husband appeared in 1966, but has already become overgrown with legends. Tourists travel the path to touch the statue’s foot and look in the direction in which the iron maiden’s gaze is directed. According to legend, it is then that all wishes come true.

Modern landmark

Built to attract guests, the beach castle will be a surprise for anyone who appreciates architectural works. Castell d'en Plaja, which graced the coast in 1940, will surprise you with its monumentality. You won’t be able to get into private property, but you can go up to the observation deck, which offers a stunning view of the calm sea and the bustling city. It is especially beautiful here at night, when the illuminated landmark stands out against the backdrop of the dark rock.

Several circumstances contributed to the development of tourism in Lloret de Mar. Firstly, like a significant part of the settlements of the Costa Bravo, Lloret de Mar boasts truly pleasing landscapes: sheer cliffs rising directly from the transparent depths of turquoise waters, lush vegetation and picturesque narrow streets in reality look nothing like worse than in the photo from the advertising brochures.

Secondly, the climate here is very mild, in summer the air warms up to a comfortable +25...+28 ºC, and in winter the temperature rarely drops below 10 degrees plus, which allows you to expand the boundaries of the beach season to six months a year - from May to October.

And finally, the third important advantage of the former fishing settlement is its convenient geographical location. Lloret de Mar is 75 km from the administrative center of Catalonia, the large city of Girona is literally half an hour's drive away, and after only a hundred kilometers you can find yourself on the border with France.

Story

The first written mention of this point on the map of Europe dates back to 966. At that time the settlement was named Loredo. According to the most popular hypothesis, the name comes from the Latin lauretum - laurel grove. It is the mentioned subtropical tree that is the symbol of the city and is even depicted on its coat of arms.

The 11th century was marked by the construction of the San Juan Castle, which became a strategically important site in the defense of the coast and its inhabitants from attacks by neighbors and pirates. The population was mainly engaged in fishing and trade, which was in keeping with the spirit of the times and allowed Lloret to gradually expand, as well as establish strong ties with other cities in the region.

However, real economic growth here began much later, when at the end of the 18th century, monarch Charles III, among other reforms, decided to allow trade between Spain and its colonies in the New World. Local merchants appreciated the prospects and invested money in shipbuilding, thanks to which they increased their fortunes and acquired beautiful mansions, simultaneously donating money for the construction of churches and schools. By the beginning of the last century, the medieval village was completely transformed, turning into an attractive example of European urban planning. However, it took several more decades for local authorities to fully realize all the advantages of the recreational industry of Lloret de Mar and reorient themselves to the needs of vacationers.

What attracts this resort today?

In recent years, Lloret de Mar has acquired the reputation of “mainland Ibiza”; European (and not only) young people are actively flocking here, who prefer to spend their holidays or vacations, shuttling between a variety of entertainment venues, pubs and nightclubs. There are really a lot of similar places in the city, so everyone can find something to their liking.

But the resort of Lloret de Mar lives not only for parties. People, tired of the hustle and bustle of everyday work and the noise of big cities, take great pleasure in enjoying the peace on the wide, well-maintained beaches. There are 9 of them in total, ranging from 250 to 1500 meters in length, and even in the high season it is possible to find a free section of the coast to get your portion of the sun and breeze. The most popular and crowded is the municipal one. Entrance to the territory is free, a fee is charged only for the rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, but if you wish, you can sit on your own towel. By the way, the sand here is unusually coarse; it is even compared to small pebbles. Some people like this “covering” because it hardly sticks to wet feet, while others complain that it is inconvenient to walk without shoes.

The sea is clean and transparent, but you should swim with caution, since a cliff begins a short distance from the shore (50-100 m). Swimming beyond the installed buoys is not recommended even for those who feel confident in the water, and this is not only due to the kilometer depth, there is a risk of being caught by the current, which will carry the unwary swimmer out to the open sea. But this does not mean that in Lloret de Mar you will be bored at the edge of the surf - the flat sandy bottom allows both adults and children to safely enter the water. In addition, lifeguards are on duty on the beach during the day.

For lovers of active recreation

When you get tired of the phlegmatic absorption of ultraviolet radiation, feel free to go to the famous Water World! Fortunately, you can get to this huge water park by free bus, and it is located very close to the city center, offering a lot of entertainment for visitors of all ages. Believe me, it will be interesting not only for children. An all-day ticket ensures that you have time to appreciate all the water slides, attractions and pools, while relaxing on the green lawns or on rented sun loungers during breaks. Please note that children whose height does not exceed 80 cm have the right to attend free of charge. On the official website of the center (it even has a Russian version) you can always see the current work schedule and find out about the discounts available for online orders. The latter often allow you to save significantly, so don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of promotional offers.

If you prefer open spaces, Lloret de Mar has diving and snorkelling centres, catamaran rentals, horseback riding, go-karting, golf and tennis courses.

The coast of Lloret de Mar will surprise you with an abundance of ancient buildings and other attractions, the inspection of which adds pleasant variety to the memories of a Spanish holiday and the photo albums of vacationers. Right on the way to the hotel, you can admire the embankment or visit one of the local museums. Among them are historical, marine and even a unique “cat”, which presents more than 6 thousand figurines of these pets from different countries and eras. An entrance ticket to various exhibitions will cost 3-4 euros per person.

The main symbol of Lloret has settled on the edge of that same municipal beach. We are talking about a two-meter statue, named “The Fisherman’s Wife.” It was installed in honor of the city's thousand-year anniversary and depicts a woman seeing off (or welcoming - who knows?) ships entering the bay. There is a belief: if a person stands next to the pedestal, looks in the same direction as the bronze figure, holding its foot, he will see the path to making his dream come true. It’s worth going up to Dona Marinera even for those who don’t believe in miraculous wish fulfillment, because the site offers a beautiful view of the sea.

High on the rocks is another iconic building of Lloret de Mar - the San Juan Castle, the same age as the first settlement. Of course, its walls, under the influence of time and the elements, have lost their former indestructibility, but the structures that have survived to this day have been restored, so tourists have the opportunity not only to see the ancient fortress from afar, but also to visit inside.

Castell d'en Plaja also looks impressive, although this building is not a castle - the medieval stylization project was commissioned by industrialist Narcis Plaja to one of the Girona architects in 1935. The building is still privately owned and closed to the public, but this does not prevent it from being decorated photographs of vacationers and souvenirs.

But the Chapel of St. Quirze (Ermita San Quirze) and the Church of St. Roman are truly the historical heritage of the region and deserve the attention of guests of the city of Lloret de Mar. The first is an example of traditional rural architecture of Catalonia, so it looks strict and laconic. Archaeologists suggest that long before the appearance of the chapel, which dates back to the 11th century, an early Christian church in honor of the Magi or a funerary monument from the same era stood on this site. Iglesia de Sant Romà is significantly younger, but it has also gone through many changes since the 16th century before acquiring its current recognizable appearance. By the way, both churches are active, and those who wish can attend services there or simply admire the interior decoration.

We advise you not to miss the opportunity to get into a unique open-air memorial museum - the Modernist Cemetery, where family crypts built at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries are located. Each of them is equipped with a plaque indicating the name of the author of the project and brief comments on the symbolic meaning of the architectural elements.

And if walking along the quiet alleys between the tombstones seems too depressing a pastime for you, go with a light heart to the gardens of Saint Clotilde. The park, which appeared in 1911, is reminiscent of the best examples of garden art of the Renaissance. Visitors describe it as a luxurious yet elegant and sophisticated place where nothing is “too much”. Grottoes, sculptures, ponds, fountains, natural landscapes and carefully planted flora combine harmoniously, creating an atmosphere of peace and upliftment.

Sights of Lloret de Mar

In Lloret de Mar, as in almost every Spanish town, you can see unique historical and entertainment attractions that are popular with tourists.

(Castell d’en Plaja) is not only one of the main attractions of Lloret de Mar, but also in its own way city symbol and identifier. The picturesque castle is the most popular building in the city; it is the one depicted on many postcards of Lloret. Rarely will a tourist pass by the castle without taking beautiful photographs of the attraction. You should definitely climb the mountain path to the castle through Sa Caleta Bay - from here there is a convenient passage to the cliffs of the coast, where a natural observation deck with magnificent views opens up.

Oddly enough, the Castle on the Beach was never a medieval fortification or the property of some Spanish feudal lord. This building was erected just under 100 years ago - the project began in 1935 and was completed only in 1941, when the Civil War ended. Castle house built in neo-Gothic style with all the characteristics of the medieval period commissioned by an industrialist and businessman of Playa Indian origin.

Its construction was not without controversy among neighbors and public outrage, but today it is no longer possible to imagine Lloret de Mar without the Castle on the Beach. The building is made of stone and cement in a rectangular shape with two round towers of different lengths and widths. The doors and windows are ogival in shape, typical of Gothic architecture. It is curious that the construction of this castle inspired Walt Disney to create his own “fantasy land” near Los Angeles - the well-known Disneyland amusement park.

2. Water park "Water World"

Waterpark "Water World" (Parque acuático Water World) in Lloret de Mar is the ideal place to spend an unforgettable day with family or friends. The water park is located on an area of 140 thousand m2 and is considered one of the most popular water parks in Catalonia! In addition to a variety of water slides, the water park includes restaurants, snack bars, picnic areas, and green areas where you can relax and enjoy a pleasant environment.

Of all the attractions that are in the “Water World”, it is worth highlighting: X-treme Mountain (an extreme slide 260 m long), Storm (two huge funnels with a diameter of more than 4 m), a water roller coaster (250 m of ascents and descents), a swimming pool with waves, as well as Kiddy Island and special slides for the little ones. Rafting River is considered one of the best attractions of Water World. This is a 215 m long slide, which you can go down on a special four-seater round boat. Great for the whole family.

A visit to the water park costs 35 euros (20 euros for children). There are discounts when purchasing a ticket for a family: for example, 90 euros when purchasing a ticket for two adults and two children.

(Iglesia de Sant Romà) is another iconic landmark of Lloret de Mar. The amazingly beautiful temple has a rich history and is probably the most recognizable building in the city. The origins of this parish church date back to the 16th century, but today the church continues to play an important role in local life and culture. The striking modernist exterior contrasts sharply with the interior, which surprises with its simplicity, modesty and timeless character.

The Church of San Roma was built in 1522 to replace the old one, Nuestra Señora de las Alegrías, as the city's main church. At the beginning of the 16th century, Lloret de Mar was subject to attacks by Turkish and Algerian pirates, so the new church was created not only as a place of prayer, but also as a refuge during possible attacks. At the beginning of the twentieth century, important restoration work was carried out in the church. When updating the Gothic facade, the architects were inspired by Muslim, Byzantine and Renaissance styles. Unfortunately, much of the structure was damaged in the 1930s during the Civil War, but the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament has survived quite well and can still be visited today.

Tourists admire unique church exterior with colorful mosaics decorating domes and towers. Although the interior of the temple is quite modest compared to the luxurious facade, there are several Venetian-style paintings that are worth paying attention to. Previously they were part of the altar. The Church of San Roma is open every day from 9:30 to 12:00 and from 16:00 to 19:30. One of the best times to visit this temple is the feast of St. Christina, which takes place in July.

Just between the central beach of Lloret and the rocky beach of Cala Banis lies the city's famous work of art and one of the main attractions of Lloret de Mar - the sculpture of Don Marinera (Mujer Marinera). This beautiful bronze sculpture, 2.40 meters high, was erected in 1966 by master Ernest Maragall.

The sculpture was created as tribute to the women of the city who had to wait on land for their husbands from long sea voyages. The right hand of the statue is raised, symbolizing farewell to her husband. And at the same time, her left hand is directed forward with a half-open palm, which symbolizes the desire for his speedy return. Thus, the meaning of the woman’s position is expressed in the words: “Farewell and return.”

The “Sea Lady” is located on a special observation deck, offering stunning views of the sea. Here you can relax on cozy benches, enjoying the pleasant breeze and sea panoramas or taking beautiful photographs. By the way, the place was chosen perfectly: excellent view of both Lloret beach to the north and Cala Banis beach to the south.

There is a small sign associated with the sculpture. If you look at the horizon (in the same direction as the statue), and at the same time touch the right leg of the sculpture with your hand, then the wish you made at that moment should come true.

The Botanical Garden of Saint Clotilde (Jardins de Santa Clotilde) is considered one of the best Mediterranean botanical gardens in Europe. It is located on the outskirts of the city in the mountains. Part of the garden faces the steep cliff of the Mediterranean Sea, which provides unforgettable panoramic views of the sea. The area of the botanical garden is about 15 hectares.

The gardens are characterized by a clear influence of the Italian Renaissance. They were designed in 1919 in harmony with the architectural design of the surrounding area. All paths, walkways and staircases are lined with planted hedges that create stunning green architecture. A visit to the Santa Clotilde Gardens costs 5 euros.

The Museum of the Sea (Museo del Mar) immerses visitors in the history of the city, closely connected with the sea. The museum building is a reference to those desperate sailors who went to American lands to get rich. The Museum of the Sea is located in the house of the Garriga family (Casa Garriga), built at the end of the 19th century and located on the Verdaguer promenade. Around 1860, the Garriga brothers traveled to Cuban lands, where they created a company producing building materials. Having become rich, they commissioned the construction of a family home in their hometown of Lloret de Mar. In 1981, the mayor's office purchased the house to turn it into a local museum.

The Maritime Museum in Lloret de Mar is more than just a museum. Thanks to modern methods of multimedia and interactive visualization, the museum tells the history of the construction of boats and ships, the extraordinary adventures of sailors, and the courage of those who decided to go on long sea voyages. The museum is divided into five areas with special exhibits: Children of the Sea, The Mediterranean Sea, Sailing the World, Lloret After the Sailing Boats and Beyond the Beach.

Here you will learn about the history of Lloret, starting from the period when the shipyards were just beginning to operate and the sand on the beach was occupied by women who built nets for the men to use for their next fishing trip. In the first half of the 19th century the city experienced a real heyday of the merchant fleet, when such valuable products as cigars, cocoa, rum and expensive mahogany species arrived from overseas. In the second half of the 19th century, the golden era of maritime trade came into decline. A visit to the museum costs 4 euros.

The ruins of the Castle of Sant Joan (Castillo de Sant Joan) are located on the top of the hill that separates the beaches of Lloret and Fenals, at an altitude of 60 meters. One of the oldest defensive castles, it was built in the 11th century: a tower and a chapel, consecrated by Saint John in 1079, rose above its walls. From the original fortification, only the foundation of the fortress, the eastern wall and the restored tower have survived. The castle served a defensive function against attacks from the sea, and due to its strategic location survived more than one catastrophic destruction.

For example, in 1356 the fortress faced an attack by the Genoese fleet. In 1427-1428, the walls of the castle were shaken by strong earthquakes. But the heaviest blow to the fortification was dealt in 1805 during the Napoleonic wars, when several English cannons destroyed the walls and part of the tower. After this, the castle was abandoned and remained unused throughout the 19th century.

It was only in 1949, when the ruins of the San Juan Castle were included in the list of cultural heritage sites, that a decision was made to partially restore the fortress and observation tower. Now tourists can climb the tower by stairs, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast. Entrance to the tower costs 3 euros.

The modernist cemetery of Lloret de Mar (Cementerio Modernista) was designed at the end of the 19th century and built over the next few years. Don’t be confused by the fact that one of the attractions of Lloret de Mar is the cemetery. This is a very interesting and unusual site that offers a broad look at the funerary art of the early 20th century. The cemetery was officially opened on November 2, 1901, after which several famous architects and sculptors presented their work here, including students of the school of the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Here you can walk for a long time along the quiet and slightly depressing streets, looking at the unusual sculptures. There is a small church in the center of the cemetery.

Private investors played a key role in the creation of the cemetery, financing both the overall structure of the cemetery and the tombs themselves. In this regard, it should be noted that at the turn of the 20th century, many “Indians” returned to Lloret de Mar, who earned a gigantic fortune in Latin America and significantly improved their social and financial status. Once home, they commissioned the construction of luxurious residences and mausoleums, demonstrating their wealth and prosperous lifestyle in the "land of life." The cemetery of Lloret de Mar may be one of the most important examples of Catalan funerary art of the modernist period.

But if you come to Lloret de Mar with children, then you should definitely visit the Gnomo Park amusement park. It is built in a Mediterranean pine forest, located on the road from Lloret de Mar to another resort town on the Costa Brava - Blanes.

The theme park is located on an area of 40,000 m2. The main area is the children's playground (Area Infantil), where the about 10 attractions for children of different ages. A subscription for unlimited access to the attractions on the playground costs 9.5 euros. A ticket for 11.5 euros, in addition to the playground, also includes a visit to the trampoline area and the gnome ranch. For 15.5 euros, mini golf and bowl football are added to the ticket. There is a small cafeteria and restaurant on the territory of Gnomo Park.

10. Gran Casino

But among entertainment for adults, it is worth noting the Gran Casino in Lloret de Mar (Gran Casino Costa Brava). This place will help you have a good time and get a dose of excitement, and maybe even win a good amount of money. The Casino has gambling halls with an area of more than 1,500 m2, three restaurants, and a garden with an area of 6,000 m2.

Gran Casino offers classic table games such as blackjack or roulette. For poker fans there are gaming tables, as well as regular poker tournaments. In addition, there are slot machines and table games for visitors, as well as a snack bar and a cocktail bar. Entrance to the casino is 3 euros.
