Namibia beach vacation. Namibia Resorts

In 1990, the country was declared independent, but it did not return Walvis Bay to South Africa under its control only in 1994. But even after this, the unrest in the country did not abate: representatives of the Lozi people declared war on the independence of Caprivi, raised an armed rebellion suppressed by the authorities. Note that since 2001 this territory is considered safe for tourists.

Namibia's independence from South Africa is underscored by the authorities in every possible way. So, by decree of President Sam Nuyoma, time in the country was transferred an hour ago. However, the world's longest wire fence crossing Namibia, as well as Mozambique and Botswana, serves not only to limit the quarantine zone, but also separates the southern regions adjacent to South Africa, considered relatively prosperous, from the northern ones.

Transport

Direct flights to Namibia are not carried out by either Russian air carriers or companies from the CIS countries. For those who bought a tour, it is most convenient to get here with a transfer in Frankfurt (Germany) or in Johannesburg (South Africa). The duration of a flight from Moscow is about 14 hours, excluding connections. There are 136 airports in the country, including two international - in Walvis Bay and Windhoek (by the way, it is the best in Africa).

There are bus routes in major cities of Namibia, but transport is rare and does not follow the schedule. It’s easier to call a taxi - there are a lot of them, and the fare is very low. It is better to travel around the country by train or intercity bus: for example, the tourist Desert Express runs between Windhoek and Swakopmund, making several stops so that tourists can go out and see the sights. In the capital and major tourist centers you can rent a car. The roads here, oddly enough, are in good condition (the legendary German quality - it is quality in Africa too!), The traffic is left-hand.

In Namibia, I only wanted to see the dunes of Sossussflay. I knew nothing more about this country and did not expect anything from it. Before the trip, I was preparing for fairly Spartan conditions. And least of all I expected to see an educated and civilized society, clean streets in cities, as well as excellent hotels with good service and delicious cuisine along the way. Now I recommend Namibia to all who may be interested in wild and at the same time civilized Africa. And yet, before the trip, it is always better to know about some features so that not a single unpleasant trifle is taken by surprise.

  Seasons in Namibia

Daytime in Namibia is equally hot all year round. The so-called rainy season, which lasts from February to April, brings diversity to the life of the country. The rainy season - this does not mean that the rain pours around the clock seven days a week. It just might rain. Unlike the rest of the months of the year, when it cannot rain in principle. And immediately after the rainy season, winter begins, when the nights can be quite frosty. Rare rains are also possible in Namibia from September to November.

Before the climate began to change, the rainy day went like this: in the morning it is sunny, after 10 in the morning clouds begin to gather, which gradually form a dense cloud. Then it all falls in a 15-minute rain. And after 10 minutes, the sun is already burning again.

Now the climate is changing. Locals say that they cannot call it global warming, but global climate change - definitely. Everyone notes that the seasons have become more extreme. The hot and dry season has become even more sultry, without any hope of at least raindrops. But the rainy season has become less predictable, the rains have become more plentiful, in some areas it can go almost the whole day and provoke floods. Moreover, the last three years in Namibia have recorded snowfall: three years ago there was one case, two years ago - two, this year - already three.

I was in Namibia in March 2012. The first four days of the trip, we saw short rains every day. Then we arrived in the Namib desert, where it actually never rains, and all day the residents of Swakopmund were pleased with clouds and clouds, which periodically rained up with heavy rain. The next day we crossed the desert: the cloudiness was dense all day, and for about half a day it was raining of different intensities. In a desert! Locals said that this had never happened.

The next day there was no rain at all in the desert. Which, however, did not stop half of the dunes in the Sosusfläi valley from being cut off from tourists by stormy rivers, which usually either do not exist at all, or any car can pass them without problems.

By and large, the seasonality of Namibia is important only from the point of view of observing animals in national parks. During a drought, all animals gather at a watering hole. It is enough to know where the sources of water are in a particular park and get to it - and here are all the animals of the park before your eyes. In the rainy season, animals have enough moisture, and they scatter throughout the territory - that is, it is more difficult to see animals, but they are in more natural and pleasant conditions.

Clothing and shoes for recreation in Namibia

There is no ritual-religious dress code in Namibia. If you want to expose your arms and legs - local people treat this with understanding. I did not try to bare my stomach and back, so I can’t say anything. Another thing is that if you are in the sun for a long time, then it's better to hide behind.

I always smeared with protective creams. But when she didn’t anoint herself and stayed in the sun for only about 30 minutes, she roasted quite noticeably. The sun is hard there, and this is worth remembering. And it's not only about creams, but also about glasses - they must not be forgotten at home in any case. Many still advise walking in hats, but I went without - and that's okay.

Separately, it is important to say about shoes. The lands of Namibia are replete with all sorts of different reptiles, the bites of which are either incredibly painful or even fatal. The only possible advice: walk through the forests, fields and deserts in closed hard shoes so that neither snakes nor scorpions can bite through the boot with their sting.

  What to see in Namibia

In Namibia there are several interesting places, all of them are scattered throughout the country and are quite distant from each other. At the same time, if you are not a fan of something specific, then lingering for a long time in any of the places does not make much sense. Therefore, usually tourists come to Namibia for 10-15 days and, traveling around the country, look at the trip for almost everything worth seeing.

You can watch animals in national parks. The largest of these is Etosha, located in the north of the country. There are also small private parks. In addition, some activists arrange on the territories of their possessions something like protective territories, in which they take care of those animals that need salvation. In these places, animals can be seen as close as in a zoo, but only their living conditions are as close as possible to natural ones.

The beauty of the desert lands is best admired in the deserts of Namib and Kalahari. I haven’t been to Kalahari, but Sossussfly and Deadfly - the dunes of the Namib desert - is something completely unforgettable!

You can relax at the sea in the resort of Swakopmund. You can’t count on the warm ocean, but otherwise it’s a pleasant resort place with a wide sandy beach, a pretty promenade and a lot of hotels and restaurants. If you find yourself in Swakopmund - by all means order oysters in the restaurant - even if you have never tried them and are not sure what you want. Or if you tried it and you didn’t like it - order it too!

In addition, an ocean trip from Walvis Bay will turn out to be absolutely unforgettable, during which you will see pelicans and other sea birds, most likely touch fur seals, you can see flamingos and generally have a great time on a boat.

To the north of Swakopmund is the Skeleton Coast - a place absolutely fascinating for my taste.

Finally, about half a day you can shine on the capital of the country - the city of Windhoek. You will not see any amazing sights and museums, but with a good guide you can see the places in which the history of Namibia has been going on, which will help you understand this country a little better. Finally, in Windhoek you can arrange a profitable diamond shopping.

  How to navigate Namibia

Public transport in Namibia is not fully developed, so you can move around the country either in a rented car, or by car or bus with a guide.

With a rented car, there are a few points to consider. Firstly, in Namibia there is a right-hand movement, that is, not the same as ours. And cars with a steering wheel, respectively, are not on the side where we are used to. Secondly, Namibia is so flat and deserted that usually the roads are laid perfectly straight - from point A to point B, there is a chance of getting used to the habit of getting bored of diversity and falling asleep.

We drove with a guide, and everything was perfect. Our guide was good, told a lot of interesting things. Without his stories and explanations, our impressions of Namibia would not be so complete.

  Where to sleep in Namibia

Hotels were one of the most significant shocks. No way I did not expect to meet a service of such a high level in the deserts of Africa. Near any attraction visited by tourists, in the cities of Windhoek and Swakopmund, as well as literally in-the-middle-of-no-where, you can easily find hotels and lodges that meet fairly high requirements. Light, warm water and the Internet are simple pleasures, but so important when traveling through Africa. The interiors everywhere were executed with taste and love. And the food was beyond praise - tasty, fresh and varied.

During our trip, we stayed in several hotels and lodges, and I can safely recommend all of them to anyone. Exploring Etosha, we lived in the Etosha Village Lodge, nearby you can also recommend the Etosha Sagari Lodge and more affordable accommodation at the Etosha Safari Camp. I would also advise animal lovers to pay attention to the Naankuse fund (N / a "an ku sê), where wild animals are saved and prepared for life in the wild, you can see them at arm's length, and you can spend the night here in chic conditions at reasonable prices .

In the resort of Swakopmund, we lived in a pleasant and bright Swakopmund Boutique hotel, but the city is literally teeming with interesting, attractive and high-quality hotels. For example, the excellent Swakopmund Hotel is open on the site of the former train station.

In the Namib desert, we lived in a lodge conveniently located at the entrance to the national park with the dunes of Sossusvlei: Sossusvlei Lodge. right next to it there is a campsite where you can get up with a car or a tent. A little further from the park, but also in visibility is the Desert Camp, where in each house there is not only a bedroom, but also a kitchen. The Namib desert is literally teeming with lodges and campsites for every taste and budget. For example, near the oasis of Zessrim (Sesriy) in the desert, we stopped for lunch at the Namib Naukluft Lodge, where from the lodges, tents at the campsite and even from the outdoor pool, the views are simply bewitching!

In Windhoek, we enjoyed the beautiful views of the city from the windows of the multi-story Kalahari Sands Hotel, located in the heart of the capital.

  How to get to Namibia

There are many options for the road, as usual. Especially if you are going to see neighboring African countries with Namibia. But if you are flying from Russia to Namibia and want to do it as quickly and conveniently as possible, there is only one way: the flight Frankfurt - Windhoek by Air Namibia. And getting to Frankfurt from Russia is not a problem. Moreover, if you buy a ticket Moscow - Frankfurt - Windhoek from Aeroflot or St. Petersburg - Frankfurt - Windhoek from Rossiya, you can do without a Schengen visa. Citizens of Russia do not need a visa to Namibia.

What to bring with you to Namibia

As I wrote above, everything is sure to help you easier to transfer the scorching sun. Protective cream and glasses are required. Sunburns, probably, cannot be avoided anyway - someone will surely forget to anoint something, so the cream after tanning is also useful. Headgear - optional.

About the right shoes, I also wrote above. In open flip flops, you can only walk around the ennobled territories of hotels and cities - and only in the daytime.

In expensive lodges, rooms usually have repellents and fumigators. But I would advise you to play it safe and take them with you from home or buy on the spot. Malaria mosquitoes live only in the north-eastern part of Namibia, on Caprivi Strip. In Etosha and to the south there has not yet been a single case of malaria infection, but it is impossible to completely exclude the possibility that malaria mosquitoes migrate somewhere.

It is absolutely necessary to bring a flashlight with you. Again - in good lodges lanterns are in the room for use by guests. But they are not always good. Or suddenly there are dead batteries in it. The fact is that the territory of the lodges is usually not separately covered. That is, there is light in the restaurant, in your room-house too, but between them there may be 5 minutes walk along the confused paths. And you definitely do not want to be in the Namibian forest or in the desert - and many lodges are located in the forest or desert - at night and in complete darkness.

A laptop or smartphone, if you can’t live without the Internet, you can safely take with you. Wi-Fi is available in almost all lodges and good hotels.

And most importantly - do not forget to take a camera with enough flash drives. It is guaranteed that you will bring many gigabytes of breathtaking photos from Namibia to the envy of friends and relatives.

Namibia Hotels

This southern country is the place where two opposing elements live in harmony - the desert and the ocean. Despite the fact that it is wild African pristine, this does not prevent it from having upscale hotels and namibian hotelswhere a luxury vacation is provided.

Transportation Namibia

Despite the great distances namibian transport   mostly ground. If you rent a car, it is better to have a lot of money on hand to fill the tank with gasoline. A gas station usually only accepts cash. Namibia   It boasts the quality of its roads, they are very good, especially with regard to the main asphalt road, but secondary routes are laid from well-sorted gravel. Driving at night is a very dangerous undertaking, as at this time of day there can be many wild animals on the roads. Left-hand traffic.
